Hello GW owners:

Last fall I bought a 1987 Seafarer 227 for a winter project. It has now been completely redone, with new wiring, electronics, switches, gauges, gelcoat glass repaired & repolished, and a thousand other details.

This 227 is powered by a Mercruiser 470 (4 cyl/180hp). I have added an alternator conversion and the motor both starts and runs fine, but it is a carburated engine and this boat is going to live at Lake Tahoe where the altitude means that a fuel injected engine is far superior.

My question is whether anyone has repowered a 227 and, if so, what engine you would recommend. Obviously, the ideal solution is an engine that will replace the Mercuiser 470 with the least amount of structural work to arrange for engine mounts etc. Can't go to a bracket with an outboard because that would require a four stroke (for Tahoe) which would be too heavy for this boat. Anyone have a suggestion as to the best /easiest replacement power plant, or who else I might contact to find out?

Thanks for all your help,
Kevin

Plenty of cars with carbs running around high altitude, FI is a come lately technology to cars and boats, especially boats.

You may have to change out the metering jets. I know on my old Johnny 2 stroke carbs, different metering jets to choose from. Old screw out, new screw in.

I have every reason to believe 4 stroke carb has same adjustability, if you care to keep same engine. The next step depends on if you are a DIYer or not.

What kind of carb do you have? Holley's are dirt simple but the Rochester 2 barrels are a PIA (unless you know what you're doing don't open it up). I doubt you have a 4 barrel but if you do the Rochester 4 barrels aren't that bad to adjust as are the AFB's.
