Repowering a 25ft sailfish

Aloha,

I recently purchased a 1990 sailfish. This boat has twin 200 L200ETXD yamaha 2 stroke engines. I am going to repower it but I was wondering if anyone knows if twin 150's would be sufficient? I live in Hawaii and this boat will be used mostly for fishing and diving. I dont see the need for 400hp for this. Also, what are your opinions on Yamaha vs Suzuki motors?

I have a '92 model Sailfish with twin 2006 200 HPDI's. I can't imagine less power since we have really tough inlets and seas in my area and need the torque to push through. I love the instant take off and top speed. I just ran 45 miles back home this past weekend at 40mph with no problem. Top end is just under 50.
However, if no need for that, I would assume 150's would work, but you might have a tough time planing out if you have a heavy load, full fuel/tackle/ice, crew, etc. These boats are pretty heavy.

Take a look at the 1990 brochure on the Grady website. They list a max of 400 hp. Of course, they also offered an inboard version with 260 hp, but I don't think those things sold very well at all.

Then I think about my previous boat, a 258, with a foot less beam and 700 lbs less weight and 300 hp was ideal.

I have to believe that when you load that boat with fuel and dive gear, you would be making those 150s work really hard. And you wouldn't have that extra 'push' on tap that you might want in a big following sea.

Hey, so what did you end up doing in this case? I was thinking of repowering my 25’ Sailfish with twin 150 Honda’s. The marina said they would be fine. Just worried about not having enough power.

I have a friend with that set up, twin 150HP 4s Yams and he's very happy with it.

I am currently in the same position, my boat is a 1993 sailfish but I was getting a good deal on a pair of 115’s. But after reading this thread I will also try a pair of 150s

I don't see that boat with 150"s ..... My 240 offshore had twin 140 loopers and finally repowered with 150 ocean runners ...they were just right for that boat ..... I think i would go to at least twin 175- 200 's......
