I purchased a 1987 Grady White 204 Overnighter. 1992 Mercury 200 HP 2 stroke. Thought it was a good deal. 5 hours on the lake and threw a rod. The boat seems to be in very good condition otherwise. I am considering a full new motor repower and restoration. I have a few out of the box idea's and want to start seeing if they are possible and cost. It may be less expensive for what I want to accomplish compared to a new Robalo R250 let alone a new Grady White.

Can anyone recommend someone that does Restoration? I am located in the Allentown, Pa area. Anywhere from Va to New England would be fine.

Thanks

When you talk about having a boat 'restored' that can amount to a lot of expense. I can't tell what restoration work your boat needs especially since you say it is in very good condition. Your boat is 35+ years old and probably has more issues than you are currently aware of.
All that aside, in general , a full restoration and repower done by an outside provider, will probably cost more than the boat is worth. If you are in love with the boat and can afford to pay for a restoration and repower, that's up to you but if you decide to sell, you will probably loose a good portion of your investment.
So the first question to answer is what will it cost to repower and are you willing to spend that amount.
Them you need to ask what repairs/restorations you want and how much each of those will cost.
Just for my curiosity, was the oiling system operational?

Thank you for the info. The boat had been in salt water and I believe the motor was not properly maintained. I was curious if the oil injection system was working properly. That is why I wanted to have a professional look at it and see how many problems there are that I have no idea about.

If there are no structural issues, I don't have a problem spending the 25K for a repower.

Recon, I normally don't mention this as I'm on this forum as a Grady owner/enthusiast - not for advertising. But it sounds like you're in a bind. If you're interested, as luck would have it, my shop is in Allentown (and I own an older Offshore!). I'm not sure what you're all after in the "restoration" process, but engine reapirs/swaps and other "boat fixing" things we can do. We don't do vinyl/canvas work - but I can recommend local shops that do excellent work for that. 'Nuff said - just wanted to throw that out there.

Dennis. I would definitely be interested in stopping by your shop and going over ideas and getting an idea of cost. I have talked to numerous boaters who give a completely different point of view when it comes to Restoring or just buy a new or slightly used boat.
