Welp, got her all buttoned up and started and she did not take priming and she has a pee stream that is easily 2-3 times what she had before.

New axle will be ordered in a few days and installed labor day weekend or before.

new poppit valves and thermostats should be here tomorrow and then she’s ready for a new trial.

right now, running each for an hour with a vinegar and water solution then an hour with water only.

Thanks for all the help, @Bloodweiser and @Sparkdog118...major help andgreat attitudes guys.

@Lsquared, we’ll be ready soon!;)

@Bloodweiser well, the majority of the issue was resolved before I ran them. I sprayed apple cider vinegar into the anode ports and then spent about an hour per motor cleaning what I could around the ports and then I put a hose directly into the top ports. The water was almost milky at first and there as a lot of residue on the ground after that. I did that and then alternated spraying vinegar into the top ports, flushing a few times till the salt was no longer visible and the water came out clear. Then I put the lower units on and ran it in the water/vinegar solution, so... all clear by then.

The water was noticeably stronger on startup and, unlike before, I did not have to run it with the bib on it, then remove it and run it off the tub, to prime it.

Are you de-mineralizing the motor or basting it?Apple cider vinegar???? That's a new one for me. I though that apple cider vinegar contains sugar and you wouldn't want to heat up a sugar mixture in an outboard.
Set me straight.

I used very little apple cider vinegar, mostly white vinegar. All of it was flushed out afterwards, but it is a heck of a lot cheaper and less harmful after being flushed out than Saltaway.

The apple cider was used on the anode point Buildup with a spray, the white vinegar was used in the flushing. Then I ran straight water thru for 30 minutes.

With as much buildup as this had, it needed a stronger solution to clean up and worked very well.

Anything you use, even Saltaway, requires a major flush to stop the acidic reaction it creates. So long as you do that, it is fine. If not, even Saltaway is harmful.

Btw, white vinegar is probably just as good, but I already had a spray bottle with the other in it and i was using it for cleaning parts and then soaking them in water. I did not want to mix them. All of them got a good cleaning before being used again.

Sounds like you have it covered. Saltaway is expensive but you don't use all that much if you use their adapter cup thingamajig.

Now if you had a barrel of pickles, you could have used the brine. That might make the exhaust smell interesting.

Lol, yea...I will probably use Saltaway next time, but the previous owner’s mechanics did such a bad job of maintaining this engine, I wanted more than that cup of cleaning. So, this was more effective and would allow me to flush it longer.

The key is to flush it out afterwards.

Also to note, vinegar and saltaway are not that different. If you use muffs on your engnes, then saltaway may as well be used as you would have to either have that saltaway device or rig a garden tool for fertilizing to add the vinegar. I had one of those but decided this was easier.
If you have a tub like I do, then I compare the costs of like 50 bucks and a cup of saltaway ( the saltaway is like 50-ish bucks to get the kit and only holds like a cup of the liquid) with the cleaning effect of 5 gallons of vinegar and 95 of water and I felt this was more effective....especially at only 1.50 per gallon.

As stated, anything you use to break down the salt will require flushing out with fresh water. The difference being that the vinegar is less harmful on the dogs, if you have them, than the saltaway.

So, is a good trick, and did a super nice job...imo.
