Has anyone added additional rod storage to the cabin of a Sailfish?

I have a 1995 27 that I use primarily for fishing and wanted to add some rod storage. A friend of mine who is pretty handy with woodworking stopped over and we came up with what seems like a good game plan. My thought is to remove the cover for the stove and the stove itself (I will put it in storage because I don't use it). On the surface where the stove was we will mount a lower bracket which will support a vertical board with 4-5 rod cutouts on each side. That will attached to existing through deck bolts on the ceiling (will need longer hardware). For the front section I want to make it so it can be easily removed so, the bunk can be used on the rare occasion. Using the existing hardware from the hardtop mount we will mount a bracket to secure another vertical holder which will have a cross section running to underneath the walk around the cabin. The forward mounts will be secured with a combination of lock washers and wing nuts for easy removal.

Does anyone have any pictures of what you have done?

Thanks,

Fred

Sounds like a plan! Be sure to show how it turns out if you do it. I'm tired of my rods banging around on the cushions and stove area!

Good day, guys. Here are some pictures from a recent mock-up we did. I was hoping to get a couple of more rods on here but, the spacing just didn't work out. Between this and OEM holders I will be able to secure 8 rods/reels and 3 gaffs/harpoons. This will be a tremendous improvement to my cabin. Let me know what you think so far.

They look a bit large in the pics, I bet you could tighten them up a bit and save space.
Here are a set that could be mounted to pine boards to give you a custom contoured rod holder. See how tight they are? http://www.coldtuna.com/

Why not look at the cabin rod holders that GW offers and copy/improve?
You could hinge them to allow you to save space like the GW version when not fully utilized and also hinge where they attach to the side to allow them to fold out of the way when not in use.

Another idea.

This was only a mock-up. The final product will be narrower. The GW ones in the links don't add enough storage for me and I want the ability to remove them. It was easier to just fabricate them than bastardizing someone's design.

I know this is an old thread but, I scraped my original wood idea and moved on to a different option. I bought a 10 rack holder (http://www.ebay.com/itm/261040755460?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT) from Ebay. My thought is I can use the metal frame of my port window to secure some sort of mounting setup (thinking a block spanning them window height to provide a spacer between the window and reel handles) then securing the holders directly to the block for the aft setup. I was thinking of using the bolt holes (installing longer bolts) from my hardtop which come through the cabin ceiling to use to hold something else to hold the forward rod holder. I am just not sure how to go about lateral support.

Has anyone else tried anything similar?

Thanks

I came up with a different approach to get more in the cabin. Was able to get my 8 trolling rods in a vertical position with a PVC platform and hold them down with bungees. Works great all season.

Interesting.... I still have to build that tackle holder or, might just use a wooden craft crate from Michael's or AC Moore. They're really sturdy and 1/3 the cost. Could stain and poly it and likely get a few years out of it.

How are the rods staying upright?

The rods are ball bungee'd together in sets of 4. Then I wrap another ball bungee around a screw in the top of the tackle center. You might be able to see this if you zoom in.
