I'am thinking of purchasing a 2000 to 2008 model year Seafarer 228G. Are there any structural areas that could be of concern such as transom and/or stringer rot and/or damage.
Replys would be greatly appreciated.

Normally, a Grady from late '90s and newer do not have any inherent transom or stringer problems. Some older ones from the '70s-80s, and some '90s experience soft transom cores if not properly maintained.. Like any other preowned boat though, a thorough inspection by a qualified person would be a good idea, just in case.

Where can I find info on recommended stringer/"Grady-drive" maintenance? I've noticed some thin vertical cracks (maybe these are "spider cracks") on each side. I know my 228 is a tough boat, but it would not be fun to be offshore, look back, and see my engine has disappeared.

Thanks! :hmm

Somewhere around 23000lease Grady switched from an everyday marine plywood to Evergreen which has a 50 year no rot warranty of sorts. My 228 is now 7 years old put into service in 2009. There are zero cracks in the transom or any other place for that matter. She spends the summer floating in Fontanna Lake in a covered slip though my stern is a tad exposed. The Grady drive is bone dry. The 228 has a fully closed transom which eliminates the issue of vertical water penetration through that aluminum trim strip on the motor well. I guess the tradeoff could be the bracket bolts and all are sources for water penetration. Then again the motor mounts on other G radys have the same issue.

All in all a maintained 2000s 228 should not hsbe issues on the stern. Good luck in your search.
