Seafarer Throttle Problem

I am new to this forum, so thanks in advance. I just bought a 2001 GW Seafarer 228 with a 250 Yamaha two stroke. Took it out for maiden voyage and ugggh. Worked fine for 20 minutes, then the throttle failed to accelerate. It runs forward and reverse, but only at idle speed. The phyical throttle seems to work smoothly, but will not accelerate, even tried the shift override and no change to idle speed. Am I missing something? Any suggestions on where to start looking? Much thanks...CLIF

Take the hood off - the throttle cable and shift cable both connect on the stbd side of the engine. See if the throttle connector popped off. This will make more sense once you look at it - it's pretty easy to see what's going on once you're there with eyes on it. Next would be to see if the throttle cable is actually moving - observe at the engine while someone moves the throttle handle... and then checking connections at the handle, if needed.

I don’t know the specifics of that engine but if the throttle cables all look good and they move the butterfly then you may have a fuel or air problem. Possibly a limp mode to protect the engine from some malfunction. Or dirty fuel or some other reason that the engine will not accelerate past idle. Most common problems for lack of acceleration are fuel related.

Ditto. Make sure stuff is moving under the hood. Sometimes the cable clip comes of and the cable has nothing to push against.

"Probably" not limp mode. For one, he would have had an alarm, right? But most importantly, limp modes don't go right to "idle only" - they usually still allow some RPM... at least from my experiences.

I'd bet the throttle linkage is disconnected ( broken link ?)

I missed it bc I was on my phone, but someone suggested looking at the linkage. Thanks, did that and was OK; but I got a mechanic to open up the throttle lever, and trace things back. The problem is a rusted/corroded throttle cable. So he's going to replace it, and at the same time replace the shift cable.

A rusty and corroded cable will not move smoothly as you originally stated. A broken cable core on the other hand could act that way.

Either some of the original stated facts were incorrect or there is something else going on other than just a rusty cable core.

Oh, I was not clear. The cable was both rusty and broken.
