Seastar Hoses for a 22’ Seafarer

Does anyone here know how long of hoses I need to buy for my 22’ Seafarer.

This boat came with the copper lines and they got damaged so I need to replace them with new hoses.

Please let me know if you know.

Hey Norcocoastal, help me help you . help me , help you. ( a line from Jerry Maguire), you have freshwater supply hoses, scupper drain hoses, live well hoses, washdown hoses, fishbox drain hoses , front deck drain hoses and bilge pump hoses.

So, which hose are you in search of here? None of those should be copper .

Norcoastal is referring to the steering hoses I believe.

Those copper ones are very old.

Hopefully another 228 owner can measure for you, I am far away from mine right now or I would get that to ya.

SeaStar offers plastic hose for steering system. Snake it and get a length. I wouldn't bother to take the copper lines out.

Thanks guys, yes you I’m referring to the Seastar steering hoses. The copper ones are damaged and I’ll probably just leave them there.

I need to buy new ones and I’m not sure of the correct length. I can measure when I go down to the boat, but I’m asking because I know that you need extra to fit the ram properly.

Also, my boat never had the stern bulkhead mounted hoses. Not sure if it’s worth cutting holes in the transom for that. I’ll probably just run them out the center hole with the control cables. What do you guys think about that?

How does the copper transition to the steering ram now? Probably best to bulkhead mount and use short hoses to the motor(s). This way if they should pop they are easier to replace.

I was thinking of that then I googled other Seafarers the same age as mine and they all just go through the center hole in the transom.

I replaced my 280 Marliln hoses last year, they were copper and started to leak. Getting them out was not hard and made it easier to pass new plastic hoses. If you dont take them out they may leak hydraulic fluid for a while making a mess. My copper did junction with plastic in the bilge. Another thought is to use bulk hose and Parker field replaceable fittings. I just used 8 making up the hoses for may auto pilot.

Question.
My 08 Seafarer I had to replace the seastar helm . I mean I could have repaired it I suppose ,but either way I put a new one in last spring. So, do you know if your stearimg system is actually ok minus the hydraulic lines? I ask because given the age of the boat you may want to replace the entire system with a new helm control ,lines and steering rams. my boat didn't have copper and I don't recall my 1998 192 having copper either.

I replaced my trim tab lines and they were 22 feet long. I am guessing you are looking at 22 to 23 feet in the steering lines. it's just a guess and your mileage may vary.

Did the copper lines actually get damaged, and if so how, or did they just start leaking? Age of boat. My 2000 has copper lines.

My old Seafarer had copper as well, newer boats have braided plastic . If I was you I would replace the copper to the transom with new plastic and retain the short hoses from the transom to the ram. If they look warn replace them as well. If they are original I would replace then even if they look OK.
Copper gets brittle and eventually will crack , braided plastic is much better that's the reason GW stopped using copper.

They got damaged. When I detached them from the steering pump they practically crumbled. They were pretty weak. Not sure if they ever leaked, the lines were empty when I got the boat that btw, is a 1988 and 33 years old.

Can you tell me where they were attached?

I see where the junction is in the stern where they transition to the plastic/rubber. I’m curious where the copper is attached to the boat between that junction and the front of the boat. Are they connected somewhere between the junction and where they attach to the pump?

I‘d like to take the old copper out.

FYI, there are several types of Seastar hose. You need to match to your Helm/cylinder type.
Lower pressure sytems on Inboards, I/O, and smaller Outboards use 3/8 nylon with compression fittings going to "Baystar" cylinder
Outboards over 150HP generally use 1000 psi Seastar hose going to Seastar cylinder.
There are SeastarPro 1500 psi kevlar hoses going to "Tournament" cylinders.

Sometime they make a bulkhead connection so you would be able to replace just the short exposed piece.
its not necessary. There is also a 1000 psi or 1500 psi hose called a "Bulkhead Hose" that has a thru-bulkhead grommet installed before they crimp on the fittings. This allows you to buy a pre-made hose and install it without having to crimp or install any end fittings. This is not relevant if you have 3/8 nylon hose because compression fittings are readily available and somewhat easy to install
