Shinnecock Canal Locks under repair no locking anticipated until June 1, 2008,

Due to erosion conditions, the Shinnecock Canal Locks are under repair and it is estimated that they will remain inoperative until at least June 1, 2008.

US Coast Guard wishes to ensure that all mariners are aware that traniting the canal will only be possible during this period when tidal conditions open the tide gates due to natural forces. This essentially means that transit is possible for alternating periods of 5-6 hours per day being open, followed by a similar period of time being closed. Mariners are urged to exercise caution even when transiting the locks during the open periods as tidal forces in such a confined space can be and are considerable.

The Shinnecock Lock Master is available to give advisories as to when the locks will be open. The number is 631-852-8299. Various web-based services may also provide valuable generic information to mariners.

Keep in mind that the vessel that has the current on its stern is the stand on vessel (has the right away) when going thru the locks and the other vessel is the give way vessel.
