marina wants to charge me $10/foot to remove and dispose of shrinkwrap on my 282; i have let them do it in the past but now no way;

was wondering if there is any technique to removing the shrink on my 2002 Sailfish with Twin F225s; obviously, don't want to damage anything!

the marina used wood to form the structural high points on the hard top over my radar arch and (almost) completely covered the engines with shrink;

any comments / pointers on this subject would be much appreciated.

The only issue Ive had removing is with the engines. The wrap can stick to it and actual peel of the finish on the decals. They have been using a seperate plastic pad the last few years to prevent this.

I cut it off in pieces. If you can, get in the boat under the wrap and use a dry wall razer. I walk around the boat and point the razer away from the boat so not to accidently cut anything that you dont want cut.

Good advice!!! It's very easy to nick you gelcoat if you aren't carefull. Also... only cut the nylon straps that are securing the shrink wrap. Do not cut the straps the are used to hold up the wooden support structure. After you get the plastic wrap off then attack the support structure piecemeal... that way it won't get away from you and flop over and damage your boat or the boat next to you. Once you start you'll see the next step is pretty logical and mostly common sense.

I know a couple of guys who have gotten multiple seasons from their wrap. If removed carefully it can be re-used.

I thought I heard of every conceivable charge...

I always take mine off, just use a razor and cut a hole to get in the boat, then cut it all off in pieces. Most marinas recycle that stuff now (or they should be...). Cut it off in managable pieces and then place in large garbage bags.

To charge $10 a foot is insane. Time to find a new marina, those guys are hosing you.

Buy a semi custom cover from boatcoversdirect.com, it will pay for itself in two seasons...green, clean and very easy to install with a second set of hands.

appreciate all the advice; thank you!

....it is true that it should be a crime to charge that much (or any amount) for shrink removal especially if you also have a slip and store in the winter;

guess the marinas are all trying to get as much revenue as they can so they can make up for the decline in slip rentals, repairs, etc.
