Has anyone ever had to cut into one? Just wondering what the core is. Swim ladder was pulling loose so I took it off and it looks like wood possibly rotted inside. Was going to just fill the holes with epoxy and redrill them out and remount ladder. Any one have any other suggestions or been down this road before?

My 228 had the full width swim deck and it had the same problem. I discovered it the same way you did, looking to see why my ladder bolts were loose. I removed it, turned it over and started drilling 1/4 inch exploratory holes in the core. I wound up replacing the entire core.

I used 1/2 inch wood blocks, 3 in x 3 in. I bought the wood from Lowes in their special cut section. I used polyester resin from Lowes hardware and cloth from there also.

Woondering if foam would be an option. Kinda like whaler does?

Foam won't give you the strength you need. I would go with something like Coosa board and fiberglass and it would last 'forever'. Coosa is expensive :(
Foam core board made for marine applications can work but would have to be sandwiched with fiberglass cloth and resin.
I don't know what actual wood Halfhitch used but the only choice for wood to me would be marine ply ( or end grained balsa if you could find it). Treated lumber is not a good choice.

FLWhaler, go to YouTube and you can find many, many videos about doing the job your looking at. Any of the tutorials about recoring hatch covers or cockpit hatches is all the same.
