Thru Hull transducer in Hull pocket yes or no??

Updating a new to me 1998 grady 272 sailfish. Removed old fairing block style transducer. How much turbulence have you go installing a standard thru Hull in the pocket??? Obviously it’s not the ideal location but wondering how bad it will be if I go lazy way out and install there instead of plugging the hole.

hehehe loaded question.... whats a standard thru hull? I would call a bronze thru hull with a fairing pretty standard...
What are you putting in? Have you upgraded to CHIRP sonar? How many watts? Do you need sideVu? Do you need dual freq or single?

It is possible that there is a bronze thruhull that fits the hole and does what you need. Since it is a flat spot, you don't really need a fairing anyways.
I would call that the ideal location.

Am I looking back towards the transom? What did the old faring block look like? I am not sure what area you are proposing for the ducer but I would be concerned about an air pocket and/or turbulence

can't answer directly. i have an in-hull mounted over the pocket in a Marlin. not experiencing any issues. god luck, ron

By In-kull are you referring to a shoot through (no hole in hull)?

If so and that works well, a thru hull can only work better I would think

Picture is looking at the stern of the boat. Correct I was worried about basically the void or pocket of turbulence while underway. If installed in the pocket would be a 0 degree versus a 20 degree. I think I’m going to go infront of pocket approx 5” and towards the keel a touch

I installed an Airmar B-275 series and the fairing was slightly larger than the pocket, plus would need some serious recontouring to fit the curved part of the hull correctly. I skipped using the fairing and just hung the brass in the pocket. It didn't perform well and I switched to a flat flush mount B-W-175 instead. This will pick up the bottom at WOT and has performed well with regards to laminar water flow.

Absolutely need the fairing block. It is a great place to mount and depending on the ducer and fairing block you may need to do some modification to the block. The ducer needs to extend below the plane of the rest of the hull or you will always get interference at nearly any speed over about 18 to 20 knots.
