My port outboard will lower with the thumb control on the binnacle. However, it will only rise up to midpoint then stops. I have to continue to raise the outboard with the raise/lower switch on the outboard itself.

I’m sure this is a common repair, but its new to me.

any direction would be appreciated!

Did you try to refill the oil reservoir? I’m not sure that would be the answer since it seems to work with the switch on the outboard itself, but it’s a very simple first step to check. Often there is a plastic cap to remove (be careful not to strip it), and you fill with ATF, then raise and lower the engine and refill again until all air bubbles are bled out.

If that doesn’t do it I would suspect an electrical issue with your switch at the helm

also just reply with some more detail on your model engine and year and someone might have some more targeted advice

When trim/tilt goes up further with cowling mounted switch then it has nothing to do with hydraulic oil.

Yes that is a rather uncommon problem.
As the cowling mounted trim switch is working I would expect that the on the control installed switch has a problem after pressing it for a while or something on the cable is disturbing the signal from the control mounted switch, corrosion for example.

It would be helpful if you tell the crowd here what brand and model of outboard and control you have.

Agreed, not common and perplexing. I suppose it is possible that there is a bad wire in the motor rigging harness (motor well rigging tube. As the motor tilts, a wire in that tube mat get strained or flexed and that has caused a loss of connectivity. I would try raising the motor from the helm while someone else wiggles the rigging tube. Remove the cowling and wiggle the harness connection too.

engines are 2001 YAMI swII 200’s. I do have a small leak at the ram seal of my hydraulic steering, but don’t believe they are related and will fix the seal when I pull the boat.

Well, 23 years is a long time for cables, so I continue to check first that, particularly as seasick described.

The ram leak is not the problem but will lead to problems sooner or later and you should install new seals.
Before installing new seals check throughly the rams for dings, nicks or any other damage on the chromed surface as if there are damage/s then they will ruin again the new seal in a short time.

You have bullet connectors about a foot below the control box. With the ignition on, twist them a few times, and see if that helps your connections. If so, pull them apart and clean them. If not, pull them apart anyway, find the hot lead, and jump it to each of the other two, probably blue for up, and green for down.

If it keeps stopping at exactly the same point as you trim up using the handle button, look at the wiring in the engine and/or rigging tube. If it stops at various "half way points", then it could be there or anywhere else along the way in the wiring... but it would be strange to be somewhere else and KEEP stopping at about halfway. I'd focus on where the wiring is bending during the tilt process.

The Yamaha trim buttons can become intermittent from time to time. I have the dual switch and individual switches at the helm as well as the one on the motor. I had the problem with dual switch once and used WD40 on it. Try using all to see if you can isolate. If the switch a quick fix with the WD.
