should i pay attention to the 230hp rating on the 93-98 tournament 223 models or can they take a 250 hp?
since i am in the market i have been looking at the old grady catalogs. as i understand it the tournament 22 and seafarer ride on the same hull so should be able to handle the same hp, and the seafarer should logically be heavier. that is exactly how the 80s era grady catalogs work but not the 90s. in the 90s tournament is rated for 50 less hp than the seafarer but at the same weight. then in 1999 the tournament rating goes up to 250hp even though i see no design change (the seafarer hp rating drops to 250hp in 98).
here is the detail
-until 1985, the tournament 223 is listed at 2400 lbs and rated at 280hp.
-until 1985 the seafarer 226 is 2600lbs and 280hp rated
-in 1985, the tournament 223g is rated 3000 lbs with a motor and the 228g is 3200lbs with a motor
-in 1986 grady got a new scale so the 223 jumps to 2675 lbs and the 226 jumps to 2875 lbs (both still 280hp rated)
-in 1986 the 223g is now listed 2800lbs no motor and the 228g is 3000lbs no motor.
-in 1987 the 22' tournament is dropped and the 226 and 228g listing are unchanged
-in 91 the tournament 225g returns with a 230hp rating and a 3000lb weight. so it gained 200 lbs from the 86 225g but lost 50hp?
-oddly, the theoretically heavier 91 228g seafarer is also 3000lbs (but has a 280hp rating)
-in 93the 223 tournament returns and the hp rating is 230hp and 2875 lbs
-from 87-97 the 226 seafarer is 280hp and 2875 lbs
-in 98 the seafarer drops to 250hp
-in 99 the tournament 223 rises to 250hp
it looks like they just used the seafarer weights when they reintroduced the 22 tournaments.
i cannot figure out the hp ratings though. maybe only the seafarer transom was offered for twins early on but why wouldn't they rate it for a 250?
