7/23/19 Planning to do the Florida (Fort Pierce) to Abaco (Green Turtle) Crossing in early December. Will be on a planning hull at say 20 knots average speed. This will be my first trip. Will be on a 24' Grady White with a Yamaha 250 hp. Question: what are the sources I can use should I experience a "break down" during the trip; what businesses and what ports? I am a member of BoatUS and currently trying to negotiate BoatInsurance for the trip and 3 month's stay at Man O War but having difficulty. I am thinking my Insurer once identified can hook me up with Providers?
Should I do a "straight through" to Green Turtle (long run for a day) or do the West End thing or some other?
here is an article from Boatus on that written in 2011. that is pretty old now and well after the time I went did that trip back in 2002. There was nothing there especially in the way of communication. things have changed now and might look to do another trip to great harbor myself.
watch your weather window especially the wind, once thru the gulf stream it will quite down. i went out of Lauderdale to Bimini going from Ft Pierce is another way to go out of but seems a lot longer than straight across. that will be a long trip from Ft Pierce to Green Turtle ~ a 10 hour day.
maybe give BoatUs a call and see if they can give any guidance watch Gulfstream Grady group and see if anyone else is going
