I have to buy a trailer for my 2006 GW 228 with a Yamaha 250 four stroke. My choices are a Wesco with a 5900# CAPACITY... or a Load Rite Elite with a 6000# Capacity. Both are tandem aluminum trailers with brakes on 1 axle. I think the Wesco has a cypress bunk and the Load Rite is a treated pine bunk. Both are new. I can get them for the roughly the same price. Anyone have any thoughts or advice ???? :hmm

I am located very close to Wesco, Columbia, SC and they are a first class operation and stand behind their products. They sell a lot of trailers to the different dealers and they have rebuilt trailers for me in the past (not always Wesco). I vote for them.

Make sure the numbers you quote are actual capacity and not maximum gross weight trailer rating, one is actual load capacity and one includes the weight of the trailer (about 1K #). Your 228 is gonna gross out near 5k ... :wink:

I had a 226 that weighed over 6600 lbs on the scale, including 900 for the trailer. This was with a half tank of fuel.
Between the 2, I'd go Wesco. But, if you are near FL, call Owens and Sons (Aluminum Slide On) at 727-323-1088. They will build a custom trailer for the boat for the same money.

Thank you Curmudgeon . The numbers I quote are indeed capacity and not gross vehicle weight... I hope the numbers Grady lists on their website includes the hardtop weight. That's the one thing I am unsure of.

The listed weights DO NOT include the hardtop....they are a dry hull only.
Figure about 450 lbs for the hardtop.
A 6000 capacity trailer will be fine....a 6000 GVW trailer is probably not big enough....
JiminGA has his 228 on a Wesco trailer....if I recall he has the 5900 lb capacity model, so if that's the one they are quoting you, you should be fine.

I have a 19' Tournament sitting on an EZ=LOADER trailer. Took me about 3 minutes to put it on the trailer for the first time this afternoon (i'm used to my little tiller skiff) So I am not a complete newbie at trailering. It might be worth the look if there is a dealer in your area?

Thank you for your reply Gitter !!! I was kinda in a dilemma. The boat was in SC and the Load rite dealer and plant are very close to me. I opted to buy the trailer made specifically for my make and model down in SC in case I ran into an issue down there. My thinking was if I get it right down there maybe I wont need anyone up here ( I know for sure I will need their help setting it up down there with the boat ). No ideal solution really.. But I am happy with my decision and very happy to have the Wesco trailer...
Congrats on the boat. I trailer a lot, as in several trips a year to and from Fla and NC. Plus rregionally around NC, SC, GA, and TN, here is the deal. You will want brakes on ALL the axles. Towing is easy, stopping is the critical part. I just bought a new trailer from Seels in Charleston. It is a Venture, I was in a bind and needed a new one for my trip and MidCarolina did not have one. Good luck and enjoy your Grady. My brother is an engineering professor at ECU.
