Transom Bang Plate - '01 180

Hi all,

Any one had any trials/tribulations with replacing the bang plate on their transom? I have an '01 180 that has the original aluminum plate on it. Nothing seems to be rotting (SP?) but my marina says they seal it up with new acrylic cap and 4200. This involves taking the engine off...

Would love to hear your experiences!

If there's nothing wrong with the existing one (which is what it sounds like you are saying), why replace it? Otherwise, yes, what your dealer is saying is typical and pretty straight forward. There's also lot's of info about this (use search function) - in case you wanted to read more about it.

those things suck. you'd think by now they would have found a better way to address the hull/liner joint on the transom.
 
I replaced mine last week. It was corroded really bad. We removed motor, fiberglassed over the joints under the cap to completely seal the Transom and replaced with a stainless steel piece. Came out great.

Looks awesome - Jzeno.

My Marina/Mechanic let me know that there was no issue with water "pouring" out of the transom and that they sealed the joint up. Instead of re-installing with aluminum, they replaced the whole bang plate with PVC...I liked the look of the aluminum but...
 
Your transom was full of water ?
 
NO! My Transom had no water in it at all but my bang plate was all "banged" up. The point I was trying to make was that Grady doesnt close off the transom joint and that can leave you in a "wet" situation if you dont take action. I was glad that my marina closed the joint up to make sure that no water gets in.

Gotcha! I know, I took a gamble on buying this boat with holes in the cap and open joints I wasn’t positive no water ever got in. When we removed engine they drilled a test hole in the transom and came out with dry clean wood! Was very happy to see that and then have it all sealed up.
 
I had it glassed completely closed. Everything is water tight.
