trim/tilt Problem

Today when I lowered my 250 Yamaha outboards the port one tilted all the way back up on its own. I can hear what sounds like a hydraulic pump running and it keeps running for quiet awhile even though the engine is fully up. While I hear the pump I can't lower the engine with any switch. When it stops I can lower the engine and even start it but it will start to tilt almost immediately until it is back at the top.

What are my possible problems? My first thought would be a short in a switch - maybe the one on the motor.

I would bet its the motor mounted trim switch. Water splashes up inside the housing and shorts everything out.

I had the same problem with mine - except it kept trimming itself down. You can unplug the switch and live without it til you find a new one. The throttle switch will continue to work fine.

Thanks.

I'll head down to the boat this morning and try that today. With three switches I don't use the motor trim switch much.

I'll let you know the result later.

Problem solved - definitely the trim/tilt switch.

I replaced the switch today and all is back to normal on my GW.

Thanks.
