I was at my Yamaha dealer a while ago to have the engine fuel filters: VST, HP, etc. done.

The dealer called me at home , his mechanic said the motors have a case of LOM.

What's that? I said.

Lack of maintenance.

WHAT? ME??

So I drive doen to dealer.

The mechanic shows me the VST filter with the white color "solyent green" slime on it.
(The engines worked fine last time out, no surging, no loss of power)

So you know me, I know the maintenance schedule inside out.

I said the motors only have 70 hrs !!
(In line with the Yamaha published schedule!)

That's what I have to be to protect the warranty - as far as I'm concerned.

I hear Yamaha changed the VST filter media to last longer, so next year I will do them again, myself, with the new design.

Dealer said they should be done very year, no later than every two years.

Two years and no sooner for me!

And we are talking about $30K of machinery here, no nickle and dime gear. I'm not taking any chances.

Hey BobP

What is VST ?? I just bought a Gulfstream with about 170hrs on a 250 4 stroke. I had a compression issue on cylinder #6 - it was too high. They surveyor came to the conclusion it was some carbon buildup in there because the previous owner idled the motor most of the time. He recommended to do a VST and a de-carb. Any idea what this is and how much it costs to do ??

Oh no, not another oil thread...

Bobp argues legal standing on warranty claims, others are just afraid, others argue the benefits of synthetic lubricants. It's a no-win.

I only got the three year warranty on mine, and it's up. I don't know why they go back and forth on the 5-year, I guess it's a promotional thing. I don't think they have a lot of claims, but I could be wrong.

Second oil change at about 70 hours mine got amsoil 4-stroke oil. And I use their PI or performance improver product, it's a fuel system cleaner, lubricant, and anti-carbon formula. I'm at about 300 hours here and doing my annual maintenance, will report on the plug condition and piston tops in a couple of days. But I'm sure it's just fine.

It seemed to run quieter and smoother after about 200 hours.

EDIT: Spike, the VST is a fuel filter system; here's a how-to-do-it for servicing: http://www.bogueinletnc.com/yamaha/8.html

For the carbon I would employ either the shock treatment with Ringfree or Amsoil PI with a high concentration, run the snot out of your motors for a couple of hours. Should be fine.

It would take A LOT of carbon build up to raise the pressure noticably. Also if it's only in 1 cyl. I'd look at the injector for that cyl. Pull the plug and have a look inside it'll show what the chamber actually looks like and no guessing. If there is a lot of carbon, you're going to need more than a double dose of ringfree, it's seafoam time.

A lot of idling may have helped the problem but it's not going to effect only 1 cyl, dig deeper.

ya but they do not make boat motors!!!!

drive your car in first gear all time, that is what a boat motor does!!!!

A VST

VAPOR
SEPARATOR
TANK

no just a filter, what it does is cool the fuel so it does not boil under the cowling

Did my 100-hour service yesterday. Got a sand-blad plug cleaner and did the set that came out last time and put them in this time around. The ones that came out were spotless, and the piston tops were clean too. I'm going to keep using Amsoil PI.

Updated the thread on waterpumps too. The worst of everything was the thermostat - lots of salt caked on!
