In regards to the Ipad reliability and being able to take rough seas, ourselves, along with many other off-road race teams use ipads for navigation during Baja races. I can promise you that the off-road race cars dish out more abuse than my boat does. As far as overheating we sometimes use them for 40+hours straight for navigation, although it is not always directly in the sun. We also use them in places there is definitely no cell signal. The app we use is called leadnav. The ipad has worked flawlessly for navigation in regard to off-road racing, if it had the right app on it I would not hesitate to use it. I can someone saying that the internal electronics could fail but the same could be said about any electrical navigation system.
