Hello Great Grady folks,

I am looking at buying a 2002 Voyager 248. It is currently powered with a 2002 F225 Yamaha. As far as personal experience with a Voyager, I have only done basic water tests - no long-term exposure. My research indicates that most of these boats have motors with greater hp, and several of them have twins (with total hp well over 225).

I would appreciate any comments/experiences regarding Voyager 248 motor configuration. Thank you in advance.

Re: Voyager 248 power configuration

I can't offer you any input beyond suggesting that you do some research on the Yami F225. It seems there is a corrosion problem in the exhaust system that Yamaha is not taking care of. There are a number of posts here on the issue and on thehulltruth.com.

Re: Voyager 248 power configuration

Dan: My 258 is the same hull except with the running bottom extended all the way to the transom. I'll say that the 225 is enough depending on what you want to do with it. For a few guys to go fishing, it will get you on plane fine, give you a top end of 38 - 40 mph, and get you 3 mpg on calm water. However, if you routinely fill the boat with people or gear, then the 225 may leave you wanting more power.

Re: Voyager 248 power configuration

Hey Dan,
Your boat is newer than mine to begin with. I recently purchased a 1996 248 Voyager with a Yamaha 225 2 stroke. I know this is not a equal comparison but here are my observations. When I went to sea trial the boat I was really concerned with being under powered. I called Grady and this was way they set the boat up at the factory. I was pleasantly surprised at the performance and after a couple of months running the boat very pleased overall. The boat is not yet rigged to fish and no outriggers. The boat planes easily with the motor trimmed down and adjusting the trim after on plane to improve performance works well. Cruise is 30 mph at 4000rpm and WOT is 43mph at 5500rpm with 3 adults, no tackle and full of fuel. Average fuel burn is around 2mpg overall maybe a tad more. According to Grady Tech support that is right on target. I plan to repower in the next two years with a single 300 and hopefully be in the 50 mph range. Otherwise the boat handles, rides, and does every thing very well so far. Best of luck. 8)

Re: Voyager 248 power configuration

I have a 258 with the F225. I agree with the comments above - it is just enough.

Re: Voyager 248 power configuration

Thank you all for the very quick and informative responses. Seems like, absent any corrosion issue, the F225 would probably be enough power - for now. I plan on making an offer shortly - will keep you posted.

Re: Voyager 248 power configuration

Update...

Okay - we (me/seller) have agreed on purchase terms for the 2002 Voyager. The boat is mine pending personal inspection, and mechanical inspection/hull survey.

Hence my question to Great Grady: any suggestions/reccomendations for mechanical inspector/hull surveyor in the Two Rivers, WI area?

Again, thank you all for your help.
