What am I not seeing - max towing?

Okay, my new Ford has a 5.0 V8 and a. Diff gear ratio of 3.55. I can look on the Ford website and it says max towing 9100 lbs, but the door sticker says 7000.

What am I missing? I know this can tow 9100 lbs, based on what Ford says, but shouldn’t the stupid door say that?

Also, check out the air bag install pictures.

How many of you have one and wited it to the battery vs the fise box?

I was warned not to do that by Ford.

Truck weight plus boat and trailer with everything your going to tow, should not be over GVCW.

I hear ya...but even google will not tell me what the hell gvcw stands for or how to calculate it. Just knows gvrw etc

Yea, not finding gvcw anywhee, so does not tell me what the max towing is. I mean, I hear ya...I also know that if I ask Ford...any Ford person, they will point me to the specs that say the 5 litler v8 with 3.55 tows 9100 max.

And others will say “look at the door sticker” yet none of those match.

So, just trying to see where it is written.

Very deceptive of Ford

So 7000 lbs is max towing, they added 2100lbs for the truck etc....

But, my truck is a half-ton so...hrm.

Cannot see this truck not being able to pull my boat. I see people pulling a hell of a lot heavier with a hell of a lot less.

But, at least now I see how they came up with the numbers.

What boat do you have ? My first Grady 25 sailfish with gear weighing over 11000# . Haven’t put the Marlin
on the scale yet, but my truck can’t tow the Marlin with the cab over camper because of payload.

Putting it on the scale is great advice. But realize that after you do that you will know for sure that you are over the towing limit, and won't be able to claim ignorance or confusion.

While the boat alone will exceed your 7000# limit, I predict that the boat and trailer will exceed the 9100# that the Ford folks tried to blow by you.

Do a google search for the year of your truck and f150. A pdf should come up with max tow capacities depending on cab, axle, engine and drive type. You should be ok with towing capacity.
Rather than look at the 7000 lbs, look at the other sticker that lists payload. Your tongue weight, occupants and all gear needs to be under that number. Airbags wont be needed if your truck is set up properly.

Look, you guys are awesome.. and I get it, a lot of knowledge, but I am pretty sure that if I am the only Islander/size boat out there being pulled by an equal truck, I will eat my shorts.

I get half the people on here or FB telling me the world is falling apart because of my choice, and half telling me I can pull the Sailfish I originally was going to buy. This one is a LOT less than that one and, It is what it is.

The boat is bought, the truck is what it is, was just trying to understand the sticker vs whatever.

Air bags already added.. heh.. I am all for adding things that make it easier and safer.. cannot hurt ;)

Don't take my statements as not listening, just .. not agreeing that this truck will not pull or stop this boat.

I cannot mention this boat without someone telling me the truck will not pull it. Forget the fact that they themselves have not spoken with every level of Ford persons, given them all the specs on the boat and the truck and had assurances I will be fine pulling it...or the fact that an equal number, if not more, send me photos of them pulling larger boats with smaller trucks (which I too do not recommend.. lol).. but, I have researched this to death. I will continue to do so, but with the idea of adding more things like anti-sway bars and better tow equipment, to make it more safe, not to effect it's ability to tow "more" because that will not happen.

I believe this boat will be fine. I also believe I will not be towing it with a full tank of gas, or with water onboard. The hardest part will be pulling it from the water, and that is why I bought the 4x4.

I may even need to add cement bags to the back of the truck.. lol.. who knows, but, it will tow this boat and, it will stop fine.. and I will continue to add things, like air bags, to ensure it does... but...

when / if I ever get into wreck.. I will instruct my will to make them add a post here so you can all say "I told you so"... only if it is my fault.. okay?;)

And no, I did not ask about towing, I asked about the difference between the sticker and the specs. I trust the specs more than the sticker :p

Didn’t say you couldn’t tow it , just get the weight so you what you’re dealing with.

Russ, I wonder if you are misunderstanding that 7000 pound number. Does that sticker state that that is the maximum allowable trailer weight or is that the GVWR?

On your door sticker I would expect to see GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) that includes the truck and everything in it including hitch weight. Is that what the 7000 number is?
Then there should be a GVCWR (Gross vehicle combined weight rating) as Mr crabb said is the truck and everything in it plus the weight of everything being towed.

Maybe post a picture of your door sticker and someone can help you understand it all. I can't wait to see that boat with the new top!

In the Ford Conventional Towing chart I see ... Standard cab, 4x4, short wb(122") 3.55 Rear...
the Max Loaded Trailer Weight is 8300
the GCWR is 13200
Also, the chart has foot notes

(2) Maximum loaded trailer weight requires weight-distributing hitch.


I would also assume you have the 53B or 53A towing package? You need one.
Stock rims? Changing the rims makes the chart useless.

GCWR=14400
still need weight distributing hitch and 53 a or b towing package.

Oh you guys are super fine. Don’t read my replies as anything other than discussion, but I admit the whole gross weight thing has been a huge “debate” over my ability to tow the boat everytime I discuss it, but here, heck, I just have fun talking GR lol so not offended in the slightest.

As far as the photo, let me see if my phone can edit the image to make it smaller as it would not upload it earlier.

On a side note, Ford says the sticker does not take into the towing package etc, but not sure I believe that either heh.
