I regularly fish 50 plus miles off the beach in my 228. I do pick my days here in the PNW and crossing the bars. I am equipped with backup motor, life raft, VHF, epirb, PLB, and 2 handheld radios. I have been caught out in some less than desirable conditions, but I have never felt unsafe. Make sure you know your fuel range in both calm and rough conditions.

I like the idea of crossing the bars with a epirb and the life raft. Especially the epirb. My vhf is linked to my gps through my Simrad system. I’ll have to see how that system links up on the man overboard indicator. Question being how does it get that signal out?
