I know at some point the sailfish 25 became the 272 and some were bigger/smaller than others... Can anybody get me smart on this history lesson?

Simply put, I believe it went from a 25' boat with a bolt-on bracket option, to an integrated bracket (272) to having the running bottom extend the full length beneath the integrated bracket (282). I believe the beam remained fairly constant.

Best answer is to look under "customer resources" on Grady's website where they list each year's catalog.

I think in the late 80's there were still I/Os available. Sea drive models were probably history by then, and you could get a Sailfish with a bracket, Grady Drive I think they were called, or cut out transom for outbaords. Like Wahoo said go back to the Grady site and check out the yearly sales literature, kind of interesting. At some point they began to add the bracket or euro transom to the length. After I bought mine I did not really follow changes in the model although the sport bridge model when introduced had many nice features.

Wahoo is correct. In the early 90s it was redesigned to a raised helm called sportbridge. Soon after GW went to the integrated bracket and the year after that it was renamed 272 from 252. In 98 the hull was filled in under the bracket. Around 2000 or 2001 there was a redesign which added the raised hardtop, new windows, etc. Mid decade the cabin was updated and the bench seat from the 300, 330 was added. You can see the changes by browsing the online catalogs.

Sadly, the model is now defunct and replaced by the 290.

Up until 93 the Sailfish was available with either the full transom with bracket, or with the notched transom with dolphin boards.
In 92 the Sailfish went to the SeaV2 hull.
In 94 the Sailfish went to the integrated "euro" transom bracket, and eliminated the full across transom fish box and storage. Cut out seat in transom was added. Renamed the 272
In 98 the hull was extended all the way to the motors.
In 2000 the boat was renamed the 282.
In 2005 the design was changed and the cut out seat eliminated and fish box added back across the transom. Updated electronics box and redisgned helm area. They also updated the cabin with teak and corian.
Last year for the Sailfish was 2008 with the Chesapeake 290 replacing it in 2009.

I owned a 1992 252G for 7 years until selling last fall. At the time of purchase I wanted a SeaV2 hull and the full transom fish box. Option was really the 1992 or 1993. I could have bought newer, but I do not like the cut out seat. I just completed purchase of a 2005 as I have been waiting the last couple years for them to get into a price range that I could afford.
