Who is heading out this weekend?

Lobsters are large and abundant here in key west. Now it is time to plan my escape before the hurricane comes my way. Lol.

um, your escape route is north on US1 to Florida City. Not much to plan...lol. anyone going out of Florida east coast this weekend needs to honestly stay in. I don't eat labsta, but your catch is good.

THAT is what I would like to try my hand at. I told my wife I wanted to tow the boat to FL one day and load up on lobsters lol. Is there some sort of limit on them? Not sure when/how people get them, but sure does look like fun and tasty... heh

out here some will place a few dungenes crab pots, and then fish And pull them in the return . Great smell when you return and people are steaming crabs .

We used to crap some when I was a kid. I bet the kids would love that, but not sure there are many along where we will be. I am looking forward to trying out the Garmin and sideview. I want to see the sunken liberty ship in the IC.. heh. I have gone over it hundreds of times, but not with this nice of a sonar :P

I also have an underwater camera setup I bought for my kids to try out... it's probably cheesy, but if they can see down there a little, it all helps excite the mind to being on the water for them ;)

There is a lobster season and it's highly regulated very well patrolled by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. you need to either dive or snorkle to get them by hand and they are strict on minimum carapice size. I have seen guys try take small lobsters and have seen the FWC guys arrest people and seize boats at the ramp.

I have lobstered before and while fun, it's work and there is some skill and science involved in finding them. if it's something you desire to do, you tube it and go to the Keys days in advance to get the feel of the waters, what your searching for and learn some about lobster biology and behavior. we see big lobsters on the protected reefs all the time. you should give it a shot ,but know this if you plan on going for the mini season, recreation only, the Keys book up lodging and marina slips a year in advance. it's quite popular.

...oooorrrr find someone that does it a lot and go with them.. heh...I am talking a trip, not a career :P

Thank you KY. Actually gonna run Straight across Florida bay to my home port in ft Myers. Takes about 3 and a half hours To get home in flat water 126 miles.

Mini season was today and yesterday. The regular season opens in 2 weeks. You are allowed 6 lobsters per person per day. We had 6 anglers on the boat. We limited out both days. We have a few coral heads marked that load up every year. We were back at the dock by 11 am. We also find them on ledges and rock holes. The average depth is about 9 to 20 ft. We snorkel for the single ones and when we find a bunch together, we break out the scuba gear.

sparkdog, a few years back I was in the Abacos in my 228 when at the end of my trip tropical storm Betty formed near the Turks and moved up into the Abacos. We were slated to depart on a Saturday when the storm came. our escape route was cut off and I was forced to spend an extra week in the Abacos snorkeling, sight seeing , going to the world famous Stranded Naked Island party and more. it was rough I tell you. So, I know all too well having tropical systems alter your vacation and boating plans. lol.
