What windlass are better: Lewmar Pro-fish , Sport or Maxwell ? -----=-- To the Islander Owners : What Windlass you have and, is it horizontal or vertical?
I am extremely happy with the performance and reliability of my Lewmar pro fish 1000. It is very important to have the proper size gypsy, chain, and rode. I prefer 8 plait rode as it lays much better in the anchor locker.
A few years. Had trouble getting rope/chain splice to feed but solved it. The Lewmar 700 is good choice for a 268/270 for line capacity. You could go bigger but I'm pleased with mine. 250' of anchor rode and 20' of 1/4" chain.
lewmar profish on my 270 islander. it runs flawlessly. only have to regrease the gypsey once a year (maintenance ) sometimes the 8 plait to chain splice doesn't like to feed but it eventually goes. I've got 280ft of 1/2" 8 strand and 50ft of 1/4" g43 with a 22 lb delta plow.
If I was going to start from scratch I would have mounted the windlass on the hatch so there is more free fall in the anchor locker. as its mounted in the factory position now I have to have someone flake the pile every 50 ft when winding it in. perhaps if I had less rode it wouldn't be a problem but sometimes I need all 320ft
