Need some help in figuring this out, Ive tried the internet but no success.

My boat is a 1997 228 with a 2002 F225

My question is related the the Yamaha dash gauges. I was able to speak with the previous owner and he says these gauges were for the old 2 stroke that was previously on the boat. Though they seem to function , I question them now as to fully doing/monitoring what they are supposed to be ( 2 stroke compared to 4 stroke). For Example the oil icon always has a solid bar over it ( sorry no picture) the icon never blinks and no alarm sounds, but it never goes away.
I have not removed the dash to verfiy any PN's yet,
With all that If these are two stroke gauges, what gauges do I need, or am I ok to keep using them??

does that make any sense?

thanks

I just bought a '98 GW Sportsman which sports a 2 stroke '98 Yamaha. I am needing to replace the gauges and might be interested in your tach and speed multifunction gauges if you are replacing them.

If I recall, there are dip switches on the back of at least some of the Yamaha gauges, that have to be changed going from 2 stroke to 4 stroke. Or, maybe they are only for the number of cylinders, but they are there for something.

Thanks for the responses, its confusing part# 6Y5-8350T-D0-00
If I read it correctly says its for both 2 and 4 strokes?
Digital Multifunction Tachometer displays engine RPM, trim angle, oil level (two stroke), oil pressure (four stroke) overheat warning, trip hours (resettable) and total operating hours. Replaces prior part number 6Y5-8350T-83-00.

  • This Digital multifunction tachometer is for 1996 & newer 40HP - 300HP 2-stroke and F25 - F250 4-stroke.
  • It will install in a standard 3 3/8 diameter gauge hole and provides engine RPM, trim angle, oil level, warning lamps, overheat warning lamp, hour meter for trip, reset able and total operation hours.
  • *2005 and newer Yamaha outboards that use the one plug trim and oil harness may require a 6Y5-85335-00-00 adapter harness in cases.*
SKU#: 6Y5-8350T-DO-00

what am I missing here? is it one and the same

Does having the bar over the oil icon mean I have oil pressure or that my oil pressure is low ?

There are switches that need to be set for the motor type, number of poles and trim sensor

I am not sure about the oil indication for 4 stroke but in general a blinking bar is a LOW condition. To find out, just turn on the ignition without starting the motor and see what the gauge displays after self test. If the oil bar is blinking but goes solid when you start the motor, I would think the pressure is OK ( assuming the sender is wired into the harness. You should be able to download the user manual for your model, just pick a year that the 4 stroke was standard and was equipped with the round gauges. The meaning of the displays should be in that doc.

FYI. The oil indications for a 4 stroke won't be correct if the switch is not set to 4 stroke.
The trim sensor is easy to select. It will either be correct or not!

The poles switch is also easy to check for the correct setting. Assuming the 2/4 stroke switch is set, the rpms will either be correct or off by a factor of 2 (6 poles vs 12 poles)
So, make sure the 2/4 stroke switch is set correctly first

Those gauges are not the same ones I referenced, What is that yellow thingy? Is it a switch or a plug that can be removed?
Heck it might be the mount for the gauge light. There seems to be some lettering around that thing. Is it a rotary switch?

I would imagine that is a switch to set the number of poles but it seems like the gauge doesn't know 2 stroke from 4 stroke. So you may be able to get the revs to display correctly by trying the different settings. The oil may or may not work, I really don't know. I have been trying to locate a manual or install doc for the older gauges but haven't been successful so far.

thanks for looking into this. I am thinking the best option is to order the correct or newer gauge, pn 6Y5-8350T-D0-00 . thoughts?? from reading I think this new gauge should plug right in to my existing harnesses.

Before spending several hundred on new gauges, play with the old ones. You said they do work so do what I said about testing the oil display. I am thinking it may also work. Same goes for temp alarm. You have nothing to lose ans I am certain they won't harm anything

Your gauges are really old. Probably from early 90's. I had same on on my 1992 yamaha 90hp. We were expecting the next two stroke generation gauges. 4 Strokes didn't exist when those were made. I doubt you can get any sort of oil pressure from that. But tach and trim may work. If oil pressure is important ebay if full of gauges. Also try googling the part number you have.
