Guys,

First, let me thank all of you who contribute to this site. It is a great source of information and I've learned alot from reading here.

I have twin F250 Yamaha fourstrokes on my '06 Marlin. The gauge (tach, etc) for the port side engine went out while I was trolling last weekend. With the engine running, the guage shows a horizontal line instead of RPM - (as if the ignition was on but the engine was not running). The guage is showing no readings for pressure, temp, volt, etc.

My thought is that a sensor in the engine is bad. Any ideas?

thank you,

awc

I tend to think it is the guage that could be bad. It recieves multiple pieces of information not just the RPM and since you said all the other functions are out. The water temp, oil pressure and volt meter are all different and not just RPM. There may be a fuse on the motor block that could be blown which feeds electrical current to the guage? I have looked at my fuse block on the motor for other purposes and I am just speculating on the guage thing here...tossing out an idea, even though it has no technical backing what so ever

I'm recalling two connectors to the gauge, just swap with the other one on the other motor and see, unless you have command link - not sure on those.

I can olny assume that you are talking about a 4 year old boat since you say it's an '06. I would remove and clean ALL the wiring connections on the suspect gauge and try again. Most electrical problems on boats are just that -- Simple electrical issues. Be sure to check the area around where the wire goes in to the lug or spade connector for corrosion.

Had a similar problem a few years ago. After a few trips to the local Yamaha dealer the problem was finally solved by the eastern Yamaha rep that was called in. Never determined the exact cause, but they did replace the harness, gauge, and ECM before making the final fix. Been fine since then.

I would contact Andy at SIM (Ship Island Marine). He was able to help me many times over the years and could probably offer some insight. Here is the website www.simyamaha.com

Guys,

Thank you all for your advice. My dealer advised that a chafed wiring harness created the problem. Replacing the harness fixed it. We're hoping that GW will cover this repair under its warranty program.

thanks again!
