Yamaha Speedometer inlet

Exactly where are the inlets for the speedometer on the Yamaha 225's. My speedometer has been intermittent and then not working at all. I understand that the inlets may be clogged. Help

On the bottom of the lower units on the front edge....there will be a small hole on each engine....which is where your boat registers its speed from.

I think it will only be on one motor - mine is on the starboard side only.
As mentioned above - a very small hole in the lower unit!

speaking of yamaha 225 speedometers what does the clear tube read off the engine that is hooked to my speedometer? 1999 225

The hole is amazingly smaller than one would think - like the size of a thin guitar string. On my 250 it got clogged so frequently I gave up on it. I hate not having everything on my boat in perfect working condition but I had to get over that item. The GPS speed over ground is far more accurate anyway.

Like Igusto, my tube clogs up on my 200 four-stroke. Mostly in the Keys where I have to run thru enlongated narrow beds of seaweed floating on the surface.
I have been able to clear it out and make the speedo read correctly again by a hard reverse and then a blast of forward. Unfortunately this does not always work, and when it won't unclog, I take it to my selling/service dealer and they take the engine cover off and blow air gently thru the tubing...Out comes the offending particle(s) and the speedo reads perfectly.

To my knowledge, the "paper clip" solution is technically right. But for me, that hole was so small and the debris wedged in so hard that it didn't work. I've heard of guys drilling out the debris but I've also read of drill bits being broken off. It seems like compressed air back down the tube is the best approach, and the one I took. I just got tired of doing it every other week.

I don't blame you..

I, too have the Garmin for accurate speed readings, but if the Yamaha speedo isn't functioning then my fuel MPG reading is affected. my trip odometer, and so on. I rely on those readings for trip/distance calculations.
Mine goes out a couple times a year..once in the Keys, and I usually ingest some random floating piece of crap in Lake Michigan.
Igusto, where do you boat that it screws up once a week?

Worked for me three times so far, so yes, seriously.
If you use the drill you might punch a hole in the tubing and then you have bigger problems. I found out by washing the area every time i wash the boat with heavy soap helped a lot. On the engines i have now, i don't have that problem, there is no hole for speedo.

I have used the drill trick bit a few times over the years also. I only used my hand to spin the drill bit, not a drill with a chuck. Never had a problem, just use a very small drill and be gentle (I think the bit was about 1/16"). With a sharp bit the wood fibers will come right out.

Thanks for the "paper clip insight." That is something I will definitely try in the shallows next time my tube clogs up..

Hi All, Thanks for the input on the paper clip. I went to the boat today and inserted the paper clip about an inch or so in. Felt a little resistance when first going in. So hopefully in two weeks when the boat is in the water I will know the results. As others, I use the GPS for actual speed data, but like to see the instant MPG reading which of course doesn't work if the speedo is not working. It is a lot easier than reading the GPH and doing the math. Thanks again.

As least NY is letting us get 2 - 21" flukes during May. Better than postphoning the entire season.

Dunwurkin: that is my point. You are able to connect the gps information to the fuel management system so that it figures out your mpg with perfectly accurate gps speed rather than sometimes accurate pitot tube speed from the speedometer.
