They moved up my TAVR procedure at Mayo to last Monday. Everything went well and I ended up with a bovine valve. We flew home on Friday and I'm feeling much better than I have for years. My legs are still a little weak from doing nothing for a couple of months, but I should be ready to get back into fishing the first week in October.

I actually had a great time at Mayo. I'd bet you never heard anybody say that about a hospital stay before. The docs and techs were highly knowledgeable and the place is highly organized and efficient. I learned a whole lot about cardiology and various state-of-the-art intervention procedures. My own procedure took only 1.5 hr and I was awake and asking questions the whole time. I remember them saying that they were ready to inflate the balloon catheter to seal the valve in place and the next thing they said was "congratulations, you have a new heart valve". Never felt a thing. It was a bit uncomfortable when they removed the catheter through my leg, so I asked for more "juice" and it was a piece of cake. A few hours later I already felt much better.

They kept me overnight and I will need to wear a heart monitor for 4 weeks because of some arrhythmia. If it doesn't clear up I might need a pacemaker and/or stronger blood thinner.

I'm glad to be back with a clear head again. And if anybody needs a serious medical procedure done, I highly recommend Mayo Clinic.

Doc, So glad to hear of your successful operation! Mayo is the best! I've had two operations there, hip replaced and hernia fixed, both went perfect! My daughter works there (Jax) as a wound specialist. I am always super impressed by that organization from the docs to the admin folks! Wishing you a quick recovery!

wonderful news! Congrats on the new valve! Here is to a speedy recovery!!! if you start mooing or growing udders you might want to ask Mayo for a primate valve replacement or maybe a frog? Can't wait to see you fishing pictures in October!

Glad to see you made it thru that. I didn’t even know they could do that. Bet you wish you didn’t need to know that either. You get older and you end up learning about all sorts of medical procedures you wish you wouldn’t.
I know far more about pancreatitis than I care too. It brought me right to deaths door.
But yes, glad you made it thru !

I learned that my beef valve is not actually made from a heart valve. Rather, it is made from the cardiac sheath. This is the connective tissue that surrounds the heart. I'm glad wasn't made from the penile sheath. I would have trouble living with that in me. ;)

Doc, just think how this is going to make things easier. If some of the other features of bovine biology come through. You get to eat your breakfast twice, so you won't have to waste time making a lunch to take along. :)

Great to hear! Except for the awake the whole time part. You handled that better than I could! I would have been mashing the more juice button the whole time! Here's to a speedy recovery and back on the water by October.
