Your advice - plan to buy a Grady

The person asking lives in Norway, but the boat is to go to Croatia.

In the Adriatic she will be used for fishing plus for family trips.

She should sleep 2 adults and 2 (small for now) children. So we are talking 26-30 feets I presume.

As boat has to be imported - and customs is primarily per HP - can I get a boat of my wish which runs on only one engine?

And my main questions to you proud Grady owners from a to-be owner, which models should I look for? Is the 300 Marlin the most obvious choice?

As for year / price range, looking for something in price range 30-50k, in other words a boat that has been on the water some years?

Your advice most appreciated.

I think the new 290 Chesapeake, or the 300 Marlin, or the 305 Express would be the choices. Unfortunately, none of these are single engine models, and the minimum would be twin Yamaha F225, with the Yamaha F250 a better option.

I prefer the 300, with the new 290 as my second choice.

To sleep 2 adults and 2 children, anything less than 30' will be too small (unless you want to pop a tent). Now the problem is the price range, for 50K you'll have a hard time getting into a Marlin. One that does cost 50K will need work setting the price highter. A Marlin will need at a minimum twin 225's. Assuming you're talking dollars, if it's euros, the 50K can work.

If you planning on going out on Adriatic ( i know that water, done many trips from NW Greek island to Otrando, Italy) you should go with twins and vessel in the 30 plus range. When NW winds hit that water in not funny at all, and you know that NW comes out of no where over there.

i have no input on the type, but you may want to contact Grady and see if they are dealing with european distributors now. i noticed a very recent addition to the options listing for CE certification and European/International AC conversion. i don't think this would be done for an occasional shipment overseas, but i'm no expert. i don't know, but you may be able to check out the models within a couple hours flight. ron

Take a look at the Sailfish in my signature. My wife and I have spent numerous nights onboard with our daughters who were 4 and 8 at the time. They both slept pretty comfortably in the aft cabin and my wife and I took the v-berth.

If the cost of importing is truly based on HP, then mine could mean significant savings for you because it currently doesn't have engines. Once you got it to Croatia, you could have whatever engines you like installed.

If Brian's (gw204) idea sounds interesting to you, I can tell you that his Sailfish is a very nice boat. It has been very well taken cared for since new. I know, as it was my boat for the 12 years or so before he bought it. So between the 2 of us, we know the history of that boat since new.
