You can add a product “griptex” to the surface, after you’ve applied one coat.this will give a non skid surface .

Wood - wood indeed requires epoxy.wood needs to be sealed ,polyester resin isn’t waterproof. Gel coat will adhere just fine to epoxy, you need a separation coat of vinylester - duratec surfaced is the product to use. A much better choice for that recore would be nidacor / honey comb core.this...
