    Fuel Tank Size

100% agree with this! On a side note...screws always seem to be frozen in place and could potentially snap. How do you get around this and hedge yourself from snapping screws? asking for the betterment of humanity :)

    Fuel Tank Size

On a tangential note... since this boat is quite old and new to you... and assuming (for now) that you don't know the history of whether or not the tank has been replaced... It would be very, VERY advisable to pull the hatch (it's just screws and caulk) and inspect it REALLY good to get a...

    Updating 1988 242G

I will be recaulking the bracket and some other hatches over the winter. I was mistaken, the fuel tank hatch is solid, its the hatch behind it that is soft. I think that's where the freshwater tank was/is located. I'll find out when I pull that hatch over the winter to re-core it. As far as...

    Updating 1988 242G

There may be some work but 1988 Grady is a good year. Pull the fuel tank cover, it is best to see underside of tank by lifting it out. Check for pitting where rubber strips touch tank! A new tank is best. (35 years old). Check the through hull fittings, they crack where the flange meets the...

    Core Replacement Guide?

I did the deck core replacement on my 268 Islander. Mine was done with 1/2" Coosa composite material (like a plywood sheet). West System epoxy. 3M 4000 caulk. Read this thread thru to see how it was done. https://www.greatgrady.com/threads/repairing-fuel-tank-deck-hatch-coring.30913/ There are...

    Silicon caulk or 4200?

I use a lot of different caulks as a general contractor. Boat life and sikaflex seem to be the only UV resistant. Used 4200c a few years back on the main hatch on my 282. Started molding by December. Pulled it all and used sikaflex. No mold issues. Also (in a pinch) on a small hatch used 30 min...

    Inspected Gas Tank Compartment

how much of a pain was it to dig out that caulk? i am planning to re-seal my hatch. it seems like digging caulk out of deep and narrow gap would be tough

    Proper sealants?

The most intelligent reply to the "5200" question ever. You need to post this on the grady-white forums on fb.

    Proper sealants?

The problem is the internet. When someone reads, over and over, on various forums... "I use 5200 and it's great", then one tends to believe what is written without doing their own research. BUT... those people that spout off about "5200 being so great"... what are THEIR credentials? Or are...

    GemLux Deluxe Outrigger Bases

Aluminum tower up on boat today. Tomorrow - I have to shampoo the headliner before bolting back in. Size all new 316 hardware. New trim and gasket for forward hatch. Size bolts. Caulk, bolt down and cleanup. Run wires back in tower leg. Rivets coming tomorrow. Going to paint them and then...

    Sealing the Deck

3M 4000 is what I’m using. It is UV stable. While the deck is up make sure it’s not wet and rotting out. You can replace the core and save the hatch. Screw holes around the hatch are a big source of leaks especially into the core. Deck plates can be ordered from Beckston in GW color. Use the...

    Marlin Rear Hatch Mod?

A portion of the lip is into 3/4 ply, but the edges are into a 1/4" glass. Good issue spotting. I think the glass could be served by a crimp insert. I have a kit to do that but would need to source stainless inserts. I'll use the old screws and life caulk until the season is over. Then...

2006 Marlin: what to watch out for?

Yes, aft hatch does have a vertical fold down door for access to the bilge under the aft seat. The deck comes out, but you have to cut the caulk. Maybe it is already cut as usually this is done for winter maintenance. If not, well maybe cut if you are planning to buy. It costs about $8 for a...

2006 Marlin: what to watch out for?

Aft deck has access hatch to the generator under the seat. Also fuel selector handles are in there. That one just opens. Immediately forward is a large deck hatch that would need to be resealed if opened. Can open deck plates on that hatch where seacocks are and have. Look around though.

2006 Marlin: what to watch out for?

Is that a hatch you have to cut caulk lines to open? Sorry, I'm not familiar with the Marlin yet.

    What could Grady do better?

My favorite design over the years ended up being the one I dreamed of owning someday and now have....The 252G model. I love the swim platform and bracket as it gives a very large fish box in the transom and close access over the motors when fishing in comparison to the euro transom design. The...

Creaking deck cover on 2018 Gulfstream

I agree. Plexus isn't meant to permanent. If may be used on the deck to hull seam but I find it hard to believe it was used on the tank lid. I have been wrong in the past though.

Creaking deck cover on 2018 Gulfstream

Plexus is a permanent adhesive I believe. Hard to believe that GW uses it on the hatches that require removal for tank inspections and replacements. I'd want to remove the cover, install a rubber barrier between the hatch and the deck and then seal with something that allows you to get the...
