Grady overnighter late 70's vs 80's

My 1975 204C Overnighter needed a transom after 7 years. 3 in the water and 4 kept high and dry. The stringers were not sealed properly, but I epoxyed them myself before any problems started. The wiring was primitive and needed to be replaced every few years. The build quality of the later...

    Sealing the Deck

I use GE silicon in order to allow for easier removal of deck plates for inspection or electronics installation. I run 60 lb test mono fishing line along the bottom of the opening before adding the silicon. Leaving a short tag end of line at one corner really makes removal of the old sealer a...

    Windshield wiper performance

You can rejuvenate an old brittle wiper blade with #400 wet/dry sandpaper. Then clean it with soapy water to wash away the grit.

    The New Guy

I once had the filter bowl crack during a rare freeze in Florida a few years ago. So I remove the bowl and filter when the temps are forecast to drop below freezing. It never stays cold long enough to need to drain the water tank or use antifreeze.

    Fuse panel corrosion

There are a lot of products that do a good job of preventing corrosion. Corrosion X is the only one I've used that will actually remove corrosion from surfaces.

    Running hot

The condition you describe is typical of a poppet valve that is stuck in the open position, which is how they usually fail. This is a pressure relief valve that is normally closed at idle speeds when water pressure is low. As water pressure increases with rpm, the valve opens and lets water...

    Honda 200 outboard running weird

Is your prop ventilating at 5000 rpm? You should be able to hear this if it is occurring. The only way that you could lose speed when you increase rpm is if the prop slips either because it is entraining air or the hub slips. It is highly unlikely that a hub would begin to slip over 4500 rpm...

    Trim/Tilt rebuild

I haven't used them myself, but several friends have. They have a good reputation locally. They can save you a lot of money.

Jack Plates for 1990 Grady 28 Marlin

You can use it on any transom to raise the engine. But it is a fixed extension, not an adjustable jack plate that the OP is asking about.

Jack Plates for 1990 Grady 28 Marlin

Chuck, those pieces are for extending a pre-existing jack plate. Like if you are going from a prop to a jet outboard. When you shop, remember to check the weight and hp limits of each unit. Not all manual jack plates will hold a 250 hp motor.

Jack Plates for 1990 Grady 28 Marlin

I put a 4" manual jack plate on my 226 when I re-powered with a Honda 250. I am very happy with the modification. I increased my fuel efficiency by at least 10% by tweaking the engine height. Hydraulic is of little use on an offshore boat. I got mine from Bob's Machine shop. They are very...

    ACR proves its worth

20' and under are the only ones that float level. All the others will turn over if flooded in any kind of sea.

Re Engine Time for 1986 Overnighter?

Putting a new engine on a classic boat is almost like having a new boat. Particularly if you are going from a corroded 2-stroke to a new 4-stroke. Outboards don't last forever and your's is 36 years old. The fact that it still runs is amazing. I blew up 2 engines over 11 years on my old 204C...

    weeds

If you use downriggers, even set at 5', you will keep the grass from running down the line to your bait or lure. For higher speeds, you need to run a planner instead of weight. Just use a boathook or gaff for clearing the downrigger wire and your line.

    Am I over propped?

You are running quite a bit heavier than the factory test boat. With only 150 hp, performance falls off fast as you increase the weight of the boat. Try running the boat with just yourself and a half tank of gas. As long as you can turn over 5500 rpm at WOT, you are not over-propped. If you...

    Fuel milage?

My current Honda BF250D burns less than 1 gallon per hr up to 1000 rpm. That's over 4 miles per gallon if I recall my instrument readings. I can troll down to 2.5 miles per hour at 750 rpm, but bow steer is a problem at under 3.5 mph. This is with a 16" prop that turns just over 6000 rpm at...

    Transom mount transducer on 330.

Thanks for that picture and info, Skunk. I almost made that same location modification with my Simrad 3 in 1 transducer last month but chickened out at the last minute. I was unsure if there would be too much turbulence located just offset from the keel. I can't get much of a port side-scan...
