    Re Power

You will want at least a 225 hp 4-stroke for that hull. It's actually torque rather than hp that is important both for bringing the boat on plane and maintaining a good planning attitude with a load. Your old 2-stroke 175 produces significantly more torque than an in-line 4 cylinder 4-stroke...

    Re Power

200 hp is fine for a pre-SV2 hull seafarer. I used to take dive trips with 4 people, 8 tanks, and full gear with my old seafarer that had a 200 hp Merc on the back. It had plenty of power to handle that load. The older hull design is very different from the newer boats. It has much less...

Difference between juvinile yellowfin and blackfin tuna

The finlets between the second dorsal fin and the tail are almost always yellow on yellowfin tuna and brownish on blackfins. If there are stripes on the juveniles you caught, they are vertical on blackfins and horizontal on yellowfins. Yellowfins have over 25 gill rakers and blackin have less...

Serious now about joining the Grady crowd!

The biggest difference between the SV2 hull and the older design is in a short chop. The SV2 is much softer and drier. I've only been out on the Pacific in SV2 Gradys, so I don't have the knowledge for a direct comparison. But my old '86 Seafarer road better in the Atlantic than it did in the...

Yamaha Exhaust bubbles at Idle (F250s)

One of the first symptoms of a bad midsection. Have the engine scoped as a precaution.

    2006 Yamaha F250 4 Stroke 6 Cylinder

I would not recommend running Ringfree at 2X the recommended dose. Yamaha no longer recommends owners doing their own shock treatment. They only want dealers to do it. That's because Techron derivatives tend to accumulate in the oil at high doses and can contribute to oil breakdown. The...

228 Grady owners experience with In Hull transducers

It's my understanding that using a single frequency transducer would result in a better performance (at speed) than Chirp sonar... maybe I am wrong. You are not wrong. A transducer set to a single frequency (200 kHz) will track the bottom much better at speed than on a CHIRP setting. My...

    what would you do?

I've had several boats develop blisters over the year. You have to expect a few with a hull the age or yours. They are no big deal and are easy to repair. If you find the in the bow area near the keel, they are likely the result of the gel coat getting compromised by small impacts, which are...

    Another windlass question

Do you have a picture of each of your setups? I'm trying to decide between a pulpit or just a roller.

    2006 F250 Exhaust Question

My former 2007 F250 also behaved that way. But one of the symptoms of a corroded mid section is A LOT of water and exhaust coming out of that port.

    2006 F250 Exhaust Question

That's basically a pressure relief port that lets you start and idle your engine at a standstill. Water and exhaust should only come out when you are not moving or idling in reverse. When the boat is moving forward, the exhaust and most of the cooling water is scavenged out through the...

Winter storage in NE- full or near empty gas tank??

There are a couple of factors. As Skunkboat said, the fuel acts as a temperature buffer since it has a much higher volume and heat capacity than aluminum. So the daily temperature swings are minimized. Another factor is that a full tank greatly reduces the volume of air and thus water vapor...

Winter storage in NE- full or near empty gas tank??

There is no reason to dilute the stabilizer. It is mostly naptha carrier (which is basically gasoline) with a small amount of active ingredients. I use stabilizer year-round in case the boat needs to be laid up for a while.

Winter storage in NE- full or near empty gas tank??

Completely full or as empty as possible with stabilizer added. Stabilized fuel is good for at least a year. I recommend StaBil or the Chevron product. E10 doesn't suck water out of the air to any great extent. The water accumulation is due to condensation except in cases where there is...

2005 Sportsman grinding gears when putting in gear

Does it grind equally going into both forward and reverse? If it only grinds in one direction it could be a simple shift cable adjustment. I don't remember if the 150 has an adjustable shift rod. Unfortunately, if that is not the case the lower unit will need to be torn down to find the...

    Grady 1992 Overnighter

Have you ever changed the VST filter over all those years? The symptoms you describe are typical of a clogged VST filter. Even if that is not the cause of your issue, it's time to change that filter. It takes a bit of work, so if you aren't handy or have the time, have a shop do it. Seasick...

    Auto pilot

When you aren't navigating a GPS track (which you can toggle back and forth with a press of a button), you just point the remote where you want to go and press the Direction button. You can steer the boat by repeatedly using that function. It's pretty cool. You don't need a rudder position...

    Auto pilot

I went with the Furuno NavPilot 300 also after a lot of comparison shopping at boat shows and on other people's boats. All of the other brands look like toys when compared with Furuno. The installation was straightforward, but the setup and calibration instructions were confusing. I got some...

    228 Windlass install completed.

I'm interested in how you install and Fentress anchor work out. I'm getting close to getting a pulpit kit and putting a windlass on my boat. I'm getting too old to make it around the cuddy cabin to mess with the anchor. I use an anchor ball puller right now and deploy from the cockpit after...

Does that light Fortress anchor self deploy OK? Or do you need to get up front and help it out?
