Garmin 943xsv on sale at West Marine

The Garmin Navionics Vision+ card is a great upgrade. You need to learn the Active Captain app to get the shaded relief charts install. But it is well worth your while if you are inshore bottom fishing. It allows you to see far more detail about the bottom. In the North East the wrecks pop out...

Nav lights / Anchor light not working

Nav light switching can be confusing. LED's make it worse. Typical Nav light have two circuits. In Nav mode the Port and Starboard lights are powered. The anchor light has a blocking diode to NOT illuminate the forward sector when underway. Only the aft sector is lit. Both sectors are lit if...

Shore power on a 268 Islander

No breaker. The black plug above the power cord is for my 12 VDC power for electric reel. There is a breaker in front of the isolator - I'll assume this will protect me. This is factory. I use my shore power all year - boat is almost always plugged in. I have had a 290 Luhrs, 42 Egg Harbor and...

Shore power on a 268 Islander

I have a 268 Islander with shore power. Get a copy of owners manual from GW site. It is quite useful. Page 7-14 and 7-15 show how AC is wired. 30 amp twist-lock connector can ge unscrewed and power to connector can be checked there. Page 7-17 shows accessory wiring. Red/Pink and Brown/red are DC...

    1999 Grady 272 Stringer Question

Not necessary. Photo’s tell it all. Load testing like that may not show anything. My glass guy told me ”no transoms before their time”. They are too hard to take apart. It takes time and there are signs of movement.

    1999 Grady 272 Stringer Question

Not good! What is that snot in the bilge? I would be prepared to do a $10,000 transom repair. Those over-tightened bolts are actually a swelled transom from water intrusion. They don't always turn to mush but the transom/stringer bond is compromised. That is the cracks/separation you see. The...

    Strengthening/reinforcing hatches

I did the deck hatch on my 1997 268 Islander. Coosa board to the edges. Additional bracing to match otiginal. Epoxy resin. Vacuum bagged. There are a lot of ways and material choices to do this job. Even though the labor is "free" I dread the thought of having to do it over again. Done...

    268 Islander Garmin 8612 install

I'm opening this thread for a PM since I can't send photos. Tight fit. This is before it was caulked in. All fasteners were carefully installed from behind. Couple of screws hidden under top edge of the unit. Top edge was padded out with 1/2" starboard. Nice clean flush mount install.

    130 rod holders

How much drag are you talking about? Even at 30% you are only talking 40 lbs. I would consider backing plates or glass in a long Coosa board in to back it and spread the load. I find it hard to believe that it won't hold up. But just in case use a safety line.

    Life expectancy of Yamaha F150's

I replaced balancer on both engines - on my nickel. The gear was fine but they were a little whiney. Not going to sell them and re-power now. Too big a leap.

    Life expectancy of Yamaha F150's

I have a pair of 2006 Yamaha F150's with 2,100 hours. I wanted to ask if anyone has run a pair to end-of-life and what their experience was. Do they just get tired? Or do they grenade at some point? Right now the engines still perform like new. Only interested in comments from members with first...

    Boat Separation

It's amazing how dead GG is coming into the Holidays. I worked on the boat all Summer up North. Looking forward to my Endless Summer in the Keys for 11 weeks starting Christmas. Hopefully all my hard work will pay off in fishing time (not fixing the boat).

Helm Master issue - GPS Unstable

Even with the problem “fixed” you should put a multimeter on the batteries and check charging system both engines and battery charger. I have had problems with inline fuses at the battery blow and create lots of confusion. New batteries should be 12.8 volts engines off charger off. Start engines...

    268 Islander Fuel Tank Replacement

For those of you trying to empty or clean your fuel tanks. I was surprised just how much fuel you could get out including what remained. Tanks were almost dry! You could actually look into the tanks with a flashlight and see. No camera needed. This is a re-post I did for another site. I just...

    Seastar leak

Do you have short hoses from the hydraulic ram to a bulkhead fitting in the engine well? That is how mine are setup. I blew one of the hoses and replaced both. Readily available.
