Newbie needs help please_FIRST boat- new vs. used GW?

If you are buying new you are better off with a local dealer. Warranty service can be done there easier. But make sure the dealer has a good service reputation. I'm sure a member here can validate the dealer. Beyond warranty it's less important. You need to line up someone for engine service and...

Thruster install on 232, will post pics!

You only need to glass the tunnel in. Use high density filleting mixed in to thicken and work the gaps. Then glass material all around the tube/hull edge. I used West System epoxy for the install. I recommend it for the adhesion to the polyester resin used to build the boat. A little more...

Thruster install on 232, will post pics!

I did a Vetus BOW45D on my 27' Islander. The thread below documents the journey. I went with a Duracell AGM 34 marine from Sam's Club. Lighter and has worked out just fine. Battery up forward to keep power run short. Placement is tricky because of placement parameters. Where are you located...

    Garmin Navionics+ on GPSMAP chartplotters.

Yep. Just watched the video. The whole thing is a mess right now. The $199 Garmin Navionics+ NSUS001L will give you all the US base maps and Bahamas like the Bluecharts that are pre-loaded. That would give me NJ and FL. I'll probably do this just not sure when. Also not clear how you replace...

    Garmin Navionics+ on GPSMAP chartplotters.

Yes I'm screwed. Garmin wants to sell charts! This is all similar to the G2 maps. The only difference the Vision+ offers is shaded relief - which I have for G3 - and I really like.

Make sure the dealer delivers Garmin units with Garmin Navionics maps. New old stock units will be loaded with Garmin G3 maps which is being replaced by the Garmin Navionics maps and may not be a "free" upgrade.

    Garmin Navionics+ on GPSMAP chartplotters.

Interesting that G3 charts are going away. Not worth maintaining two different map sets. New units have a 1-year subscription. I would assume that is for updates which I don't need for fishing. Shaded relief charts were nice to have in Florida Keys. I don't see Vision option that covers...

    Garmin Navionics+ on GPSMAP chartplotters.

Has anyone made the jump to the Navionics charts on their GPSMAP chartplotter? Looks like for $199.99 I can get a 1-year subscription to NSUS001L (U.S. and Bahamas). I don't have the Navionics app so I can't compare the charting. Interested in see Middle Keys and NJ inshore Navionics vs Bluchart.

    Trim Tabs

You probably have newer tabs with features mine don't have. This is for the old units but I'm sure most will apply. The harness for the trim tabs doesn't have a ground wire in it. You have to ground the pump. You probably have a ground wire at the switch and need to be sure that the grounding...

    Eliminating front windows

Not the most photogenic part of the boat! Here are some old ones. I also eliminated the windshield wipers and the rusty horn.

West Marine has a Garmin sale going on now. Not sure how it affects your dealers pricing with installation. My recommendation would be a 1243xsv (2,499.99) and a 1243 ($2,279.99) displays. No transducers in there bundles. These are a great choice for your use case. The top of the line option...

    Eliminating front windows

As part of a big cosmetic makeover last year I closed off the front windows on my Islander. Source of leaks and didn't like the look. Kept the side windows. Used old interior frames to create "fake" windows with curtains. Took 20 years off the boat! Side windows were converted to non-openable...

    Helm Chair

Depending on how I like this seat and overall functionality I may build a custom high end helm seat with all the same features. This seat looks perfect but I'm not sure how it will hold up to my fat a** and weight while rolling around out there. I don't "troll" its more like drift fishing. We...

    Helm Chair

I did a little checking. Alibaba has several sources. It looks like Springfield and Arrigoni are bringing them in. Fisheries Supply was $480 plus $35 oversize shipping. West was $699!

This is excellent advice from SkunkBoat - don't drill into your transom to mount anything! Use this block or drill thru the hull. Don't be afraid to push the dealer for the new electronics models. Although its better now they were pushing older unit because of supply chain problems. A friend on...

    Helm Chair

I just ordered a flip seat from Arrigoni Design. This should work out well. I can sit and run the boat, flip up the bolster and use as a leaning post or high seat and flip backrest forward while fishing. Easier than spinning the seat around...

    Outrigger poles what length ??

Different strokes...I'm rigged the same way as the top tournament boats in CM and OC. 400 lb LP Prime Line mono for halyard. UV breaks cord down. Mono inexpensive and replace every other year. Black's clips - If clipped on wrong side line can pull tight around Aftco rollers and fish can bend...

Garmin Echomap's are good if you only want one display. I personally like two displays and went with two 86xx xsv's. I think the 1243xsv or 943xsv's are a good choice for you. Don't let the dealer push the older 1242/942's or 1022/1222's. I don't know dimensions but it looks like you could...

How are the fuel gauges wired??

Hey everyone...this is a classic FIT - Failure Induced by Technician. Whatever he did last year screwed it up. It's likely a simple fix IF we don't complicate it and he breaks more stuff. Likely mixed something up when he took the batteries out/back in. I know because I know better but do it all...
