Considering a 282 Sailfish vs a Marlin 300, ideas?

We have been looking for about 18 months at both 282 and 300 models and we're getting closer to ready to pull the trigger on something. We will be trailering the boat at least 8 or 9 months of the year so that is a factor. It seems like the Marlin models are pretty close typically in price but less often include a trailer or at least one rated to handle the load.

Our use will range from Puget Sound and Straits fishing with occasional weekend trips to San Juans to Tuna or Halibut fishing off the coast of WA. I know the Marlin will handle the rough seas on the Pacific a little better but is it worth the trade off for the heavier wider load on the trailer? Also, we have not sea trialed either, only read and heard reports of their performance. It feels like either would be a good option and as we quickly approach purchasing I wonder if anyone has any insight or should I just keep looking for the best boat at the best value in both options?

Hi Capt, welcome aboard.. I’m going to be bias here, the 300 Marlin is the best boat Grady has ever built, lol.. I trailer 6-7 times a year with a 2018 Ram diesel with no problem at all. I live in California and all that is required for trailering are flags. I also have 3 hamsters ranging from 6-13 years old and when our CFO joins us there is still PLENTY of space for all 5 of us. Mine is equipped with a tuna tower that folds down for transport and that is a big hit as well. The only downfall is the fuel bill but when your at this level it doesn’t matter anyway, lol!! Nice looking boat. I'm currently waiting to hear back on a 282 with a fold down tuna tower with gps and controls in the tower. That would be pretty awesome for chasing bluefin. I have heard a lot of good things about the Marlin but most of them I find are east coast which means a long haul home.

I have a 282 based in Seattle I use off the west coast of Vancouver Island every year. It is a fantastic boat with no problems in the nasty BC Westerlys, or following seas. I tow it all over with a Ram 2500 Cummings, no problem including on BC ferries without overwidth tags. I am considering up grading to a 33 express for family comfort. Let me know if your looking for a clean low hour 282 with a trailer rigged for fishing the Westcoast. BK

Yes I am currently looking for a 282 or Marlin. Pricing is obviously a concern as always but please let me know what you have and what you're thinking price wise. The other one I reached out about online from the east coast hasn't responded yet. Year, engine info and condition along with some pics would be helpful. We live in Port Orchard closer to Gig Harbor so not far from you. Thanks

If I were trailering, I'd do the 282. 9'3" versus 10'7" beam. The Marlin can be trailered but it is a beast on the road.

Fish, I think the beam on the 282 is 9' 6". The 232 Gulfstream is 9' 3".

The Marlin indeed can be towed as ShannonC depicts. Just don't daydream while your pulling it....

I wanted the Marlin, but I had to consider trailering so I went with the 282. Absolutely love the boat. The 10,7 beam would have caused to much effort in the way of permits .

Looked at a Marlin today and I think I like the layout of the sailfish. The storage seems like it's actually better than the Marlin and typically a bit cheaper too. I think the wife and I both are leaning more towards the late 272 or 282. At least I know towing will be easier.

saw thi on Craigslist. Says has a never used trailer. Looks really noce with the newer cockpit layout and the better 250’s

It is a nice looking boat but also says sale pending. I'm looking currently at a bit older one with brand new motors that is in amazing shape. We like the helm layout on the older model a bit better because it has two captains seats so my wife can see and enjoy the ride. We have a Bayliner 3888 motor yacht and it has the lower wrap around sofas on both sides of the fly bridge and she hates sitting low and having visibility limited while underway. Not sure what will happen but this current one looks promising.

Just got my offer accepted on this boat. Now working out the details on whether to ship it home or drive out and get it. Looking forward to getting some tuna blood on the beautiful decks.

Congrats, trailer?

It comes with a 2011 aluminum tandem axle Tarpon trailer rated for 10,000 pounds. I would prefer a triple axle but will make due for now with this one which I can sell and buy a triple later if needed.

Survey happening tomorrow morning. I expect it to be everything the seller has told me and I will be driving to the east coast Monday to bring her home. I confirmed warranty on the motors this morning and that all matches with what I was told. The seller seems like the kind of guy we all want to buy from. A little OCD and likes it done right the first time. That's the point I'm at in my boating life as well.

This one failed survey. Delam over a 10’ x 4’ section of starboard mid ship. The wife and I are super bummed and back on the hunt for another one. Today’s our anniversary and we are a bit disappointed.
