Hi Everyone- When I picked up my boat and took it to a slip an hour or so away, I noticed that my cowl on my 200 had a slight gouge. It looks like a propeller hit when moving around boats in the yard( my guess). My question- did anyone ever had a cowl fixed/repaired for gauge or dent etc. I was just curious if it will need to be a complete replacement if i want it look like new again. Thanks for any input.

Depending on the extent of the damage, an automotive body shop usually can do a pretty good job repairing the damage.

I repaired my cowling after a hit to the bait tank. I used some fiberglass and epoxy to repair the dent/gauge, sprayed with primer and then with Yamaha paint. Wasn't difficult and the repair came out OK and didnt cost me much. I've since repainted it along the edge and further back on the cowling so it blends in better. Definitely not perfect, but I'm happy with it.

if a marina in your area does alot of repowers they may have a cowling.

Unfortunately they are hard to keep ding and fade free. Sometimes it is better to leave alone and let the patina happen. I've seen my share of not so great repair, color mismatch and decals that should have just been left alone. It's a rough environment and it only happens more with time.

Years back I was unable to find a color match for my 2001 150 motor. I was told that the Yamaha Blue Grey color changed at some point into a different color called Blue Grey:)

As Sdfish mentioned above, it's not too terribly difficult to do the repairs and repaint yourself if you have a decent amount of knowledge with regards to general mechanic type of stuff and/or just fixing things. I'm sure there are hundreds if not thousands of videos on YouTube that you could probably look up that will give you a little tutorial on how to do it on your own. On a previous boat, I didn't have the dent or damage, but I did repaint the cowling on my outboard at the time, which was a Honda 130 hp 4 stroke. I got the paint locally for less than $20 a can and I believe I used two of them, as well as a can of self etching primer and a can of clear. All in all, not a difficult project at all, just takes some time sanding, prepping, priming, painting and then clear coating the top. What year is the outboard? They've got several used ones on eBay for less than $1k.

At our marina there is a guy that I know have repaired hairline cracks etc esp on Verado cowlings. He also fixed a slightly more damaged area around the "chaps". This same guy normally fixes fiberglass damage so those two areas are pretty much one and the same. There are salvaged cowlings around but may be hard to find, worthwhile looking though. A new replacement might run 500-1,000 So there is the question how valuable are looks, ref make-up for women.

My ding is pretty good. I think it has me a little crazy since it is 2.5 year old new boat with ding. its somewhat similar to SDFish but maybe a little smaller. I will deal with it after our short season. Thanks again for all the input.

I touched mine up last Winter with Yamaha OEM cans. It looks OK. If you want perfect have the cowling professional done or replace it (if it is available as new-old-stock).
