Has anyone installed a 12" Garmin - GPSMAP 1242xsv in a 228?

I'm looking to upgrade my electronics on my 2000 228 Seafarer. I ordered the GPSMAP 1242xsv: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/561847 to flush mount in the console.

Now that I have the template, it looks prettttty frickin' tight. Not sure it's going to fit properly.

These are the dimensions:

DIMENSION	14.1" x 8.9" x 2.7" (35.8 x 22.6 x 6.9 cm)

Anyone have any experience with this? I've seen some people mount 12" displays before in a 228 or a 232 but never this specific model. I only have like two weeks left to return it.

Thoughts?

It may be too late, but you may consider the 1243xsv which is about 2 inches smaller. I have that smaller one in my small boat. It does not have knobs but touchscreen seems to work fine. Saves a lot of space.

What year 228? Makes a big difference, my 1997 dash is not well suited to a 1243xsv. I built an "gaudy" marine plywood box to house it. Managed to not cut any glass, just moved it away from the original glass. The newer dash panels are easier as posted above.

Took to black door off and did a flush mount with hidden screws from behind. I did have to trim some fiberglass but it's inside the box. Never going to put that door back on so get over curtting the inside.

This is helpful but my console is different, different than yours. What year is your boat? Mine is a 2000.

Take the template and transfer it to a piece of thin plywood, then cut it out so that what is left is the same size as the unit. Cutting the outside of the lines, leaving you with the middle. You can then dry fit and check clearances etc.

The 8610xsv is a much better unit. It has the higest resolution of all the 86xx series and significantly better than 1242/1243 display. Last year I swapped my 943xsv for a 8610xsv.

I used a ram mount for my 12", on the way the plotter is at eye level, when fishing you can see it from the cockpit

The pictures above on post #5 are of the 8612xsv. The 8610 is in overhead box and mounted on a bracket - not flush mounted.

I wish i had gone with an 8610. would have been a much easier install and id have a killer airmar hanging off the back of my boat.

Great choice and install.

Garmin units have an anti-theft pin feature as well. You may want to turn on depending on where you are.

That 1242xsv model is OLD. Knobs & buttons Non-touch screen. Not compatible with some new things garmin came out with.
You must have got it cheap. IMO forget knobs, embrace the trend for a flat dash touch screen. If you are going to spend money then Modernize your boat.

IMO a 12" is way better than a 10" if you only have one. You just have to cut some fiberglass.

86xx is better than 1243. But for the money I'd rather have one 1243 than one 8610

EchoMap is less money for a reason. I have one on my tin boat. Its perfectly suited for that.
Its harder to scroll around and zoom in -out on an Echo...its slow and has less resolution. It doesn't network the same as GPS models.
I had one on my 265 and sold it and got a 1242 Touch Plus (the 1243 is now the newest version)

I bought a brand new Garmin 943xsv last summer after the old Garmin 7" touchscreen unit that came with the boat crapped out on me when I did a software/maps update on it. I really like it and paid $1,499 for it as I couldn't justify spending double the price, $3k, just for the 12" version which is the 1243xsv. I really like it, though I was worried at first that it might be a little smaller than I wanted, but trolling for salmon is what I do 99% of the time and it's all I needed. I don't have radar, I rarely use it for navigation as I've been fishing that area for over 30 years and if I really want a second screen I can mirror the Garmin on my iPad with a suction cup mount that I bought. I just installed the unit in the little electronics compartment behind the steering wheel as I didn't really have the time to flush mount it since it was a couple days before the opener for king salmon. That, and I wasn't really sure about leaving the brand new unit out in the elements, and on a mooring buoy all summer where it could easily be stolen. Not that it would take much to break into the electronics compartment, and I might even flush mount it later on at some point, but it works just fine for me as is.
