I'm headed to the Ft Lauderdale boat show later this week to do my final electronics shopping and plan to install new electronics in November. Right now, unless I see something very compelling at the boat show my plan is to install a Garmin GPSMap 1243XSV with the radar bundle and add the Garmin fuel flow sensors to eliminate my NAVMAN. I’m going to keep my Raymarine Autopilot (not pictured) as it works fine. As shown in the pictures below I plan to move my engine instruments to up where my current electronics are and move the position of the chart plotter to the left of the helm as a 12" unit won’t fit in the existing box above the helm and I’m concerned if you did modify the box and put it up there it would be too high and obstruct your view. I realize I need to do something about the compass and starboard switch panel but I don’t want to take on more than I can complete prior to our scheduled Christmas Florida Keys vacation. So that will most likely be a January project
My primary question is, has anyone else located their chart plotter to the left of the helm and if so, how has this worked out for you ergonomically? My concern is not having them directly in front or you might be a bit awkward to view and manipulate. The other option I was thinking about was putting 2 9” units in the existing location. The cost would be about the same maybe a little more and I would have some level of redundancy. Now that I’m typing this and looking at the pics I’m starting to lean more to the 2, 9” units. Thoughts and suggestions please.
