Well I've had the boat 2 weeks today. Most of you have read my other post here. The wife and dog took it up to Lake Sonoma today for our first time in this boat.
First impressions.
It towed so much easier then my other boats I've owned. My other boats were cabin cruisers and were much heavier and taller. I was leaning toward a 232 gulf stream and decided on the 228 because of it's size. Happy of that choice.

Front seat is not very comfortable for me. I'm 6'3" and 300 lbs. The seat it self was fine but my legs were having a tough time finding a comfortable spot. The foot rest seems to far or to low? It just kind of left my feet hanging.

Got up on plane so easy, very impressed.

My wash down pump did not pump. I could here the pump but no water pressure. Reading my owners manual it say's there is a valve to open on the port side in the stern but I couldn't locate it yet.

Fresh water didn't seem to pump. The previous owner said he never used it. I had a hard time getting fresh water in the tank. It was like it was full. I can here the pump when I turn it on but it just pissed a little rusty water and then stopped.

Steering was hard, other then kicker motors I have always owned inboard outboard boats and they steered so much easier. It's a 1999 225 ox66 with hydraulic steering. Is it normal to be so hard? High speed was not to bad, but low speed was hard to turn.

When my surveyor tested the boat the only 2 mechanical issues he found were the wash down things I mentioned above. So I was surprised when my water temp alarm started going off at low speeds. When I sped up it would stop. I just reached out to the seller, he said it did that a few months ago. He bought new thermostats and gaskets but never put them in. He says it the alarm and he never put them in. I have the new kits I'll throw them in and see if that's the problem. He says the impeller was changed about 20 hours ago.

Docking was easy I was a little concerned because I've read people on here having a hard time docking their 228's. But this was no problem and it was pretty windy and not in my favor.

Easiest boat I've owned to load on the trailer. I plan on doing a lot of solo fishing so I'm really pleased how easy it was to load.

I think I'm going to love this boat.

For the freshwater, did any water come from the sink? What about the wash down on the stern? I have a 2000 and I noticed the wash down was a little weak but functional.

I just brought my boat in to get worked on. The alarm was sounding at 500-600RPMs and would go away at 700-800. Prior to the season, I did almost everything: Water pump, impeller, thermostats, etc but it still went off. Thinking it’s the poppet valve based on feedback here and what I have read.

Also, keep an eye on the starter. After about ten trips it stopped working. If you get in a bind, hammer and wd40 can get you out of a jam.

Nice! Love the Seafarer. Easy to tow, launch and retrieve. You could look at adjusting the foot rest for the helm. My Dad is 6'4" and 250ish. We installed new seats and he seems pretty happy to drive all day long. We did remount the footrest at a height he liked.

I repowered and upgraded with power steering and a Mercury Verado. Drive with 1 pinky finger at any speed. Ridiculous!

Seriously, for a 22' boat I can't find anything with a better cockpit and fishability. Heck, even 30' center consoles have less space!

The seacock for the washdown pump is on the port side. It's connected to a stainless rod with a knob on it. Mine is black but yours could be another color. The rod comes up at an angle above battery 1 . You either pull up to open and push down to close. If ain't open you ain't gettn no water to your pump and washing the boat down. Run with it closed. There is a lot of pressure against the pump if you with the seacock open. Should a hose fail while running it could force water into the bilge .

All y'all who fish solo are just dare evil's and dreamers. I read from time to time fisherman goes off solo and falls overboard and that's all she wrote. I ain't that brave. I could do it I suppose with a PFD and safety harness .

The seafarer is a nice little big boat or big little boat. If I could change one thing on the boat I would do these two things. I would make her 6 inches wider and figure out a way to offer twin 150s. That would the one thing I would change. Imagine having 4 to 6 inches more between the two seats up front? Imagine having twin engines on her?

It's a great boat. With that said in boats between 18 and 24 feet my biased koolaide Grady drinking opinion is Grady builds competitive boats . Regulator 23 is a sweet ride ,but I don't think there is a better boat in these sizes than Grady. Once you get north of 25 feet there are so many great sleds.

In the below thread, you will see pics that I posted with the black knobs that is referenced above. These are attached to the seacocks

I think the wash down will work now. I found to the rod and it was closed. I was looking for a Petcock yesterday not a rod to push or pull. The one for the live well was open and working. Both valves are extremely easy to open and close. As for the hard steering the previous owner installed new seastar hydrualic system last year. From what I'm reading the system may have air in it. I just ordered 2 quarts of fluid when it arrives I'll bleed the system. Today I'm going to install the new thermostats. I don't think that's the problem but I have to start somewhere.

Pighunter, I'm also 6'3". More often than not my feet are on the front of the icebox/well that the pedestal sits on.

Regarding the steering, it sounds like you have air in the system. Get it purged and see if that helps. Did the previous owner replace the helm, the seals, or both?

They did make that boat: the Explorer 24.;)

Always liked that one. The Voyager/Journey works a little better for me though.

Changed the thermostats and it made no difference. Ran about 7 minutes and the alarm went off again.

Overheating at low speed is most often a weak water pump or a bad poppet valve.

Hard steering is not generally a symptom of air in the system. If you have air, the wheel usually turns easier and more turns than the spec calls for. Air is easier to compress.

If you want to check for air, straighten the motor and manually try to rotate the motor by grabbing the lower unit and forcing it to turn . It should not move a lot.If it move more than a small amount and fees spongy, it has air in it.
You didn't say if the motor is hard to turn at rest or when at speed and if at speed if it is harder to turn in one direction as opposed to the other.

One word of advice. Bleeding the steering is a two person job. Yes there are some gizmos out there that consists of fittings and a lot of clear tubing but why spend the money ( and I am not sure they work as simply as advertised).
Read and understand the bleeding directions on the Seastar web site. Do not let the fill hose get empty during the bleeding process. If it does, you will have to start over.
If the fluid that is bled out looks decent, it can be reused. (heresy!!)

Try greasing your steering pivot tube. Work the motor back and forth.

Time to check the poppits....that may be causing your overheat alarm.

take a look at Boats.net for parts diagrams. SIM Yamaha will have those parts also.

If your impeller is over 1 year old, the rubber could be dried out. I’ve seen impellers go bad with 3 hours on them in 18 months. The king pin could be locking up on the steering. Disconnect the steering and move motor from side to side. Should be easy.

Fresh water system has a filter that could be clogged if it has not been used. If the pump is working and pushing some water I would bet it is a clogged filter. Good luck
