On the water impressions of my 228

I removed the poppet valve and it looks good not much corrosion in the port or on the spring. I guess I'll replace it? Any suggestions on what I should try next if the poppet valve replacement doesn't solve the alarm

If replacing the poppets doesn't fix it, you probably are back to dropping the lower to see what the water pump looks like. It may not have been installed properly.

Yeah I agree, I just ordered the new mushroom style kit from Simyamaha not sure when I'll get it yet.

Do you have a local dealer you can patronize? I've started buying locally....he gives me a discount if I pay cash or check and I walk out with the parts...if he has to order them they come directly from Yamaha and he gets them in a day or two.

No chance, I called, I had part numbers and everything. I was told no one was available to help me, I said what if drove to the store they said no one was available .. That was Bucks Outboard a Yamaha authorized dealer store in Sac.

30 miles away. Spent half an hour on the phone with him yesterday seeing if he had the part? Unbelievably slow and then he put me on hold and lost the call. I called back and he never picked up.

I think the wash down will work now. I found to the rod and it was closed. I was looking for a Petcock yesterday not a rod to push or pull. The one for the live well was open and working. Both valves are extremely easy to open and close. As for the hard steering the previous owner installed new seastar hydrualic system last year. From what I'm reading the system may have air in it. I just ordered 2 quarts of fluid when it arrives I'll bleed the system. Today I'm going to install the new thermostats. I don't think that's the problem but I have to start somewhere.

The steering might be air but you should check the motor. remove the bolt holding the steering rod and move the motor by hand. It should be EASY. if not, the grease in the pivot tube is dried up. In theory, you add grease and it flows to the top & bottom bushings. If its dry, adding grease does not get to where it needs to go. On my 20 year old ox66s I had to remove the zerks and spray in WD40 and work it all loose and then regrease. I also tapped in a zerk up near the top.

Worst case, you need to disassemble and replace bushings...not an easy job...I've done that before...

Any updates on fixing the alarm? Are both thermostats overheating or just one of them? If just one, after removing it do you notice if water is getting to it when idling?

So far, seems like they fixed mine today. They adjusted the throttle a bit so idle is at 550 to 650 rather than 450-550. Also, same findings as yours in which the poppet valve and thermostatS were good. However the one thermostat seemed to have something blocking it that caused the overheating but then was cleared as water came rushing through.

I changed both thermostats and it still set off the alarm in my driveway. I ordered a new poppet valve kit from Simyamaha just waiting for that now.

did you check the temperatures to see if both were overheating or just one of them? See what happens when you replace the poppet valve.

No: I need to get a heat temperature gun. They looked bad and one was stuck open. I did boil them and they both opened. Yeah I hope it's the poppet valve. It has a new lower unit seller said 30-50 hours on it and the new impeller/waterpump but that will be changed next if poppet kit doesn't work.

I have also learned not to run on those coiled crinkly hoses that shrink when you turn off the water. They have a lot of water flow resistance
On Yami motors, the telltale (pee stream) can be a decent indication of water pressure and flow. Assuming it worked before, if it is weak or takes longer than maybe 45 seconds to pee when on muffs and the motor running, either you don't have enough water flow into the muffs or the water pump needs replacement

Yes I tried some muffs I've had around and the pee stream did not appear but I didn't wait 45 seconds I didn't know that (more like 15 or 20?)
So I bought a rubber maid barrel, slipped it under the lower unit and ran the muffs at the same time, the pee stream was there but the alarm sounded in 1-2 minutes
But as write this I was thinking maybe I should have left muffs off and just ran in the barrel?.

Speaking of insufficient flow, a previous engine I had would go into alarm when running on the muffs even though I had good pressure and good size hose. I found that removing the plastic screen on the lower unit before installing the muffs solved the problem, no more alarms.
