What specific yamalube is best for these engines? Any other options available that may be less expensive that will still do a decent job?

This is a question discussed at length by a lot of engineers and others. Yamaha products are clearly the most highly recommended by the engine manufacturer. They meet or exceed all specifications. However, they are more expensive and in reality, are supplied by some oil company with the Yamaha name on it. As long as an oil meets the required specifications, it will probably work fine. That being said, I would be reluctant to go with Brand X or the cheapest. When I ran these engines, I used name brands such as Pennzoil, Quaker State, etc. I never had any problems. My engines were always clean and well lubricated. In my opinion as a mechanical engineer and charter boat captain, the additional cost of Yamalube is more for peace of mind than anything else. You can't go wrong with it but whether it is worth the extra cost is debatable.

There are two Yamalube, one for 2 strokes and one for 4 strokes. Use the correct one. In theory, you should be OK using any TWC3 certified oil although I look for one that specifically mentions "injected motors" but on OXs the oil is really not injected it, is pre-mixed in the VST tank.
I have been usin Penzoil XLF for a while especially when it goes on sale. I avoid the really cheap oils but who knows, maybe they are OK.
The cost of Yamalube is high and goes higher each season. Although it can be less expensive in larger quantities,(larger containers and or cases), I am not one to go and but a 55 gallon drum of the stuff.

I have always used the premium plus oil at boat us. Never had any problems. Perhaps it's like premium gas ... I don't know but I'll keep using it.
