This is a question discussed at length by a lot of engineers and others. Yamaha products are clearly the most highly recommended by the engine manufacturer. They meet or exceed all specifications. However, they are more expensive and in reality, are supplied by some oil company with the Yamaha name on it. As long as an oil meets the required specifications, it will probably work fine. That being said, I would be reluctant to go with Brand X or the cheapest. When I ran these engines, I used name brands such as Pennzoil, Quaker State, etc. I never had any problems. My engines were always clean and well lubricated. In my opinion as a mechanical engineer and charter boat captain, the additional cost of Yamalube is more for peace of mind than anything else. You can't go wrong with it but whether it is worth the extra cost is debatable.
