Updating 1988 242G

I use Epifanes varnish on teak. It’s time intensive but comes out quite nice. All in the prep work (power wash, spot sanding, acetone wipe down) then up to 8-12 coats using less thinner with each coat. Teak oil cleans up nice, it’s easier to use but doesn’t last as long and doesn’t have the same shine as varnish.

Haven’t tackled the wood project just yet. I tend to over research and over think every project I get into so still trying to figure out the best way to wrangle that pig.
I did replace both nav lights and for whatever reason I had no anchor light or even a trace of where the original one was located so I added one at the top of my radar arch. Had to get it done before 4th of July where I’m taking the family out for fireworks. Also added under gunwale led’s as a surprise for the wife and kids who like that kind of stuff. I’m excited to see their reaction when the sun goes down on the 4th.

When it comes to the wood trim, a power wash generally helps to prep the surface, then minor sanding, then ideally a tack cloth to remove dust, acetone wipe down and then you are good to apply varnish (or oil). Use throw away gloves all the time ideally to prevent skin oils from fouling things up

Took my kids and my nieces out to dinner tonite in ocean city. They had a blast swimming in the river and my nieces thought it was the coolest thing to be able to go to a restaurant by boat. For all wood, I really like to do the teak oil treatment. You can get the kit with the wood conditioner and oil. That should last at least a season, but it is always fun to grab a 6 pack and do the teak.
 
This morning while sitting on the backyard deck drinking coffee before the 90+ degrees heat kicks in, I enjoyed reading your entire restoration saga. Your restored Grady looks terrific. Appreciate your appetite for boat work and positive attitude. And your kids’ enjoyment of their cool ride is more than enough compensation for all of your work. Well done. Congrats.

I appreciate the sentiment. I love a good project of any kind but have always had an affinity for working on boats. It’s been a fun ride so far, pun intended!

I noticed on my last few trips that I was getting some water coming through my starboard scupper. Didn’t think much of it, just used a hunk of a nerf football and plugged it. I have my batteries in that corner and always had someone sitting there. While I had the boat at Assateague island sandbar I was investigating it more and my flap on the scupper is cracked. Going to replace both of those next and also want to get all the through hulls swapped out to stainless steel. Anybody have any thoughts on flapper scups vs the ping pong ball style?

Forgot to add, not necessarily a boat upgrade, but took advantage of the boat being off the trailer and added new leaf springs and hubs. Would like to add new brakes to the trailer but it wasn’t in the budget. The hubs I added will allow me to add brakes later on if I decide to do so. IMG_4016.jpegIMG_4017.jpeg

Looking for input. Was out last weekend and forgot the Bluetooth speaker. I have been wanting to add a sound system for a while now so I think that was a sign. At least that’s what I told my wife;) nothing crazy just a basic fusion Bluetooth head unit with 4 decent speakers. Looking at the pics below, where would you put the speakers in the front? The ones in the back shouldn’t be a problem at all.

Fortunately I’m a lousy fisherman. Love it, but terrible at it haha. In all seriousness, that’s a good point I didn’t think about. And the overthinking continues……
 
Found a very lightly used fusion RA70 and a nice Rockford Fosgate 400watt 4 channel marine amp on marketplace for $200. Picked up 4 6.5” Rockford fosgate M0 series speakers and an amp wiring kit and 100ft of speaker wire. I’m hoping to get down there Wednesday and put a few holes in the boat…..
 
Installed the fusion, amp, and 2 of the 4 Rockford fostgate 6.5’s I picked up. Sounds great with just 2 so pumped to hear it when I get the other two in. Side note, never buying a boat that doesn’t have a stereo and speakers already installed. Very itchy this evening. Was glad to see the plywood coring from 1988 was still rock solid though.
