Pulling the trigger on a pilot house on the 228

Pilot house fabricator done. Next up is drilling holes to fasten it down, more holes for radar et al on the roof, then paint, then put the electronics in, then wait for windows. Some shots with the top on. Fabricator loves the chair. The pipe with his hand on it is the wire chase, I'm going...

Pulling the trigger on a pilot house on the 228

I've got screwed up feet so you are closer to being right than you think. As it is, I lean hard on a shopping cart :-(

Pulling the trigger on a pilot house on the 228

Well this is the 3rd pilot house on a 228 that I know of in the Bay Area. The other ones are a little lighter than mine, I'm hoping that it is heavier than the hardtop so it pushes the bow down. In terms of wind resistance I think it will be close to identical to the hardtop.

    Marine decking questions

How much was it, what model boat, and did you do just the cockpit or more?

    Crows nest taking shape.

    First boat

Amen to that. The only good reason for smaller, IMHO, is if you want to trailer it. I believe OP said they'd leave it on a lift, so get the biggest thing you can fit on the lift. Something like a Canyon 271 (that hull is _sweet_) but in the dual console config OP wants. Twin engines seem...

    First boat

Just a thought, can you find a local fishing forum, get on that and see if there are people there who would take you out? If you pay for gas, I think there are a lot of people who are willing to show off their boat.

    First boat

I bought new because it was my second boat and I got a lemon for the first boat. If I were to do it all over again, I _might_ have bought used if something good had come up quickly. I've got health problems so waiting for a long time was not for me. But if you have time, yeah, it's worth it...

Yep, that's the one I modeled mine after. I think it looks great.

Hairline cracks in 2020 228 hardtop?

We're gonna see if we can buff them out, if so, they aren't cracks, just weird welding technique. If not, absolutely gonna get Grady involved.

Custom. Charlie will send them the cad work and they go from there I believe. Sorry I'm not more definite, I'm new to all of this.

Pulling the trigger on a pilot house on the 228

I missed this question. So Charlie does just the aluminum. Gary's was around $7500 but he didn't do a radio box. And I want a custom crows nest seat on top. My guess is I'll be $9K to Charlie. Then I need to get windows, I'm guessing $2K-ish, maybe less. Then paint, I suspect that will be...

Pulling the trigger on a pilot house on the 228

Look at that 3rd picture in the first series of the pilot house, the one from straight on the side. Push the front edge of the roof down 7 inches.

Pulling the trigger on a pilot house on the 228

I'm gonna try and match the hull. I may live to regret that but I don't have a plan for a different color. Gary is planning on white for his, JJMag did sort of a gray/blue thing. You're right, any color is fine, I'm weird and would like Grady almond.

Windscreen fixed, sliders on either side. I'm using Wyne (might have it spelled wrong, they are what Steiger uses).

Grady doesn't powder coat anything except the swim platform (and I believe Armstrong does that for them). They use some sort of epoxy paint and I am planning to do the same.

Pulling the trigger on a pilot house on the 228

First of all, the roof is stout, it's 3/16" while the sides are 1/8. I don't think it needs any more strength. I will make sure it's strong enough for outriggers, might get Charlie to do some extra stuff for those. Lights, antenna are easy peasy. I'll do the HDPE wedges for those myself (I...

Pulling the trigger on a pilot house on the 228

Yeah, that's how it was under the hardtop, I'm doing the same. And by the way, I don't mind in the slightest the arm chair quarterbacking. This is by far the biggest boat project I've taken on and I'm doing it for the first time (hopefully last as well). I'll take people telling me what I...
