Garmin software update - so worth it

You have no idea how many people I have told about your signature. It is spot on. I've got a friend who has a plane, I could buy 3 of those for what I have in my boat. And you know what? I'm fine with that. Took me a while to be OK, I grew up without a lot of money.

    Cool Seafarer 228G Video

I feel you. My goal is to put some memories in my brain before I can't. I don't want be a stupid Grady fan boy but I love that it mostly works. More so than other brands so far as I know. I don't want to work on the boat, I want the boat to bring me pleasure. That's why I bought it. I'm...

Garmin software update - so worth it

I do have sidevu (that's what Garmin calls it), I can post the list of stuff I have if you want. I believe the floor data is from software, not real time sonar. So that begs the question of how accurate is it? If it is accurate then it should be a game changer. I have some gizmo that is...

Garmin software update - so worth it

The Fell MOB shuts things off for 6 seconds. After that the engine can be restarted. And so far as I know, my steering is hydraulic (Seasteer) but I don't think it is power assist (if it is, it's broken because boat takes some effort to steer). I've got a 2020 228. Your advice on crew is...

Garmin software update - so worth it

To answer my own question about is the mic on my radio waterproof: Standard Horizon gx1850gb claims IPX-8 rating. I looked that up and apparently that's good for 30 minutes under water. Seems like my sandwich bag over the mic wasn't needed. Pretty cool if they are that waterproof.

Hard Top, Soft Top or Bimini Top?

Alan Tani manufactured his own racks for hauling kayaks. You can see them here: I'm not a fan of Bimini tops, youtube is full of videos of those things coming apart like a cheap suit. If you get one, get a good one.

Garmin software update - so worth it

Someone on Coastside, my local fishing forum, asked for pics of the rest of the stuff, here ya go. The last pic shows all my electronics, well the displays. Garmin 942xs in the port cuddy, Garmin 7607 aka Yamaha CL7 and Garmin 8610xsv on the dash with the radio. All networked such that any...

Garmin software update - so worth it

I just got back from my electronics guy, they did some neat stuff: - 2nd stationary VHF radio under the hardtop so you can get at it while fishing (and 100% redundant for those tuna runs) - Man overboard kill switch (neat!) - networking the Yamaha/Garmin CL7 with the other two displays, now...

Baitwell and wash down valves, can you run with those open?

My dealer said to not run with those open, he said that it could force water up through the wash down. I've not looked under the boat to see how those get water, if the wash down is a scoop forward then I can see that but shouldn't the baitwell be sorted so that you can run with that on? I'm...

    Cool Seafarer 228G Video

Some of the best days of my life in the last few years were on that boat with my kid. I'm kinda screwed up health wise so a day on the boat is awesome. I'm super happy I bought a Grady, expensive but less worries and I'm all about the less worries.

    Transom Rod Holders

I mounted some to my 228's transom. They are fine with the engine down but you don't want rods in them when the engine is up. Not ideal but it works. Even if you think they fit, remember to think about lures, the lures can scratch up your engine cowling.

    Yamaha CL7 is a Garmin 7607 (I believe)

That 942xs is my backup larger screen, I have it mounted in the port side overhead cubby. I've got a 8610xsv for my main screen. I use the 8610 mostly as a fish finder and the CL7 as my chart plotter. Except in fog, then I use the 8610 as charts overlayed with radar. The CL7 works fine as a...

    Yamaha CL7 is a Garmin 7607 (I believe)

The way it comes, it is good for a chart plotter. It won't see your transducer or radar, needs to be networked for that. I didn't ask the dealer to do it, I went to where I bought my electronics.

    Yamaha CL7 is a Garmin 7607 (I believe)

[Edit] So for people who don't know what I'm talking about (my initial message left out the context), newer Yamaha engines can have old style mechanical controls and analogue info coming back from the engine, or, they are all digital. The throttle doesn't move a cable, it sends a digital...

Need to add some rod holders

This is good advice. I have enough room on my 228 for the engine to come forward and lock in place. But I can't transport with rods in the holders, they'd scratch up the engine. But it still gives me out of the way storage for 5 rods so that's nice.

    Wildfire Destruction

Hey, Shannon has dibs if he wants, but if there are other locals (I believe we are both in the 95033 zip code) that lost their house, we have a 1 bedroom guest house that we can offer up. It would work for a couple, could work with a kid or two but would be tight, the kids would have to share a...

    touch dome lights

I hate those touch lights, my spreaders just randomly turn on when we are nowhere near the light. If anyone has a plug and play one that is regular switches, like the one in the cuddy cabin, but with 2 switches to do both lights, point me at it please!

2 questions about reenforcing the rod holders

You are right about right angles, I'm cutting this and I can curve those to beef it up. HDPE is not soft at all in my experience. I've tapped it and torqued bolts down to at least 25 foot pounds in 1/2". So maybe we have different definitions of "soft". I really like HDPE, I've done a ton of...
