    Question on Gimbal Mounts

So talk to me about backing plates, I'm guessing aluminum? How thick? Or do you do stainless? I'm also guessing you just buy stock and cut it to size?

    Question on Gimbal Mounts

They fit but I'm going to get bases and backing plates, I have the crab pot puller, it worked but it seems wiser to go stronger. I learned here that Scotty's have a drag setting on the downriggers, gonna look into that too.

Thanks for the kind words. I don't think we take pictures when we get skunked (it has happened once on the Grady and at least 3 times on my buddies boat when we were chasing salmon. Those days are depressing but you gotta take your licks). Life vests 100% of the time, those new (to me) ones...

I didn't say I could do all that drama free. Docking is the hardest, I've still got a lot to learn. I watched a commercial boat do a 180 and drift perfectly up to the fueling dock. My kid and watched it with our jaws hanging open, it was that good. Single inboard so it wasn't some fancy...

The boat is fairly sorted tackle wise, I've been fishing on the ocean for 3 years. Scotty downriggers, Scotty electric puller, Garmin screens and radar, AIS transponder. A bunch of bait caster and spinning setups. 2 drift socks. 5 boxes of jigs, crippled anchovy rigs, flashers, etc...

Welp that's a pretty lopsided retelling. You forgot about the part where I got on coastside and said I did it. If the pots got tangled and he lost his pot, I'd buy him a new setup. My bad, my cost. (They didn't get tangled, they were farther apart than I thought, so Rob is making a tempest...

I tried going the elbow grease route on my previous boat. Wasted 2 years working on that junker. Woke up one day and realized I had put my 30 years in, I had the money, asked around and Grady White ticked all my boxes. Yeah, it was spendy but I had the money and a progressive disease that...

It's usually around 55-65 on the water, that must have been a cooler day. I'll tell Dylan he's a rock star now, he'll like that :-)

Amen to all of this. I have tried to gently tell you guys, this forum is really special. People are nice and helpful. I'm a little surprised because you need to be rich to get a new Grady, rich people usually suck, no offense if you are rich but you've seen it. Maybe I'm living in a bubble...

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Greatgrady has been nothing but this, helpful friendly people. You all should give yourselves a pat on the back because you've remained civil when everyone else seems to have forgotten how to do that. Personally, I think it's more fun to be helpful. I...

This right here. *Every* time I think I have that boat figured out, and I mean every single time, something new comes around to teach me I have a lot to learn. So I guess humble is about right, you get cocky around your boat and she'll smack some sense into you. At least mine does

Coastside. https://coastsidefishingclub.com/ And I mean no dis on them, for the most part they have been great. There is always someone who wants to stir the pot. Coastside has been great.

I get on my local California forum some, truth be told I hang here more. But since I'm very new to running a boat, less than 6 months, I get on the local forum and I make it clear that I know nothing. I want to learn. Should be fine, right? Some dude on the forum gave me crap and said I was...

    Cool Seafarer 228G Video

I dropped 3 crab pots yesterday. Snotty out there, 6' @ 10s, had to trim the engine out and raise the bow so I didn't stuff when coming home in a following sea. I can definitely see why some people prefer the 226, you do get pushed around by that platform. It's fine, just trim the bow up and go.

Sorry to mess with you. One of my dogs is a rescue, I got her when she was 3 months old and the people said nobody wanted that dog. She had been hit as a one month old dog, I could not touch her. It's a couple of years later and I love that dog like crazy. She still does the scared thing but...

I can't imagine leaving the dog. Girlfriend, yup, and I don't mean to be harsh but some women treat you right but most don't. And to be honest, we mostly don't treat them right. But a dog? We are getting into old guy stuff but whatever. A few years back I went into a dark space of...

Garmin software update - so worth it

So the Garmin stuff was released in June of this year. My dealer said it was some combination of data from a bunch of different sources. I'm hopeful it will be helpful, when I saw it on my display, that has my bread crumbs from previous trips, we could see where I fished and at one place the...

    Kicker bracket

That looks fine. I got mine through my dealer, I believe a guy in Oregon makes them. You could call my dealer at (408) 371-6681 and ask them who the guy is. BTW, I mounted my kicker on the starboard side because the batteries and ~40 pounds of downrigger balls live on the port side. It works...

Garmin software update - so worth it

Yeah, it's really slick, everything sees everything. I have to lose 3 displays at the same time to come home blind. Given that it is all new, I think this stuff will outlast me.
