Sometimes they do away with the front tank for the reason of moving weight towards the rear. This can be because of outboard changes and things that might move weight positions. My 87 226 has only a front tank since it has twin outboards.

My original twin Johnson 140's are never going to get good fuel economy, so that complaint isn't anything to do with the hull design. But the weight of twins on the back most likely doesn't help the ride through chop.

I actually found a huge drill bit that I used to drill from the outside into the old fitting, it drilled a hole very close to the size of the threaded part and made removal easier. I think they used 5200 on them originally and it made the nut near impossible to turn.
